I have a 2009 Ford Escape, it’s a rare 6 banger - bought it on purpose and has the bells and whistles from its day. It has 125k miles on it and though it’s been a wonderful truck, costly parts seems to be breaking down.

Right now I have a hole in the exhaust, could be anywhere from a few hundred to a thousand. I wouldn’t fix it but was told it won’t pass smog if i don’t. I am also having some brake issues since I replaced the brakes 30k miles ago - squeeking ever since the replacement, didn’t squeak prior and sometimes when I start it up at work the breaks don’t work on my first reverse unless I pump them . It’s idling really hard and I hear a rattling noise somewhere - not sure where but think it’s in the engine compartment.

I LOVE this little SUV but wondering if its time to replace it before its worth nothing on trade in. They no longer make the Escape with a 6 so I would have to go up to an Edge which has a car frame or an Explorer
So, would you try to keep it going?

If not, where to next? I don’t want a car frame and prefer the truck chasis. My choices are to get another Escape with a 4, or go to an edge with a 6 but on a car frame, or go up even further and nab an explorer. I know they have the ecoboost on the 4s but I still don’t think it’s enough for me. I really do use my truck, not for hauling a lot of stuff, but I really enjoy the power.

Any thoughts?

If it is just a hole in the exhaust, use tiger hair and black spray paint. Run the car to cook the fiberglass until it stops smoking. spray black it so your mechanic doesn’t notice.

Aren’t Escape’s unibody?

Slide the mechanic $40 and boom you passed smog.

While it might not be “economical” to fix the Escape, if you really like it and don’t want to get rid of it, it might be worth it to fix it and keep driving it.

Pull the brake pads amd put some grease on the back of them. Squeak gone. Sounds like they need to be bled too.

The newer Escapes with the turbo 2.0 is a bit of a sleeper - quite a bit more powerful than your v6. (But I understand your like of that model - those last gen boxier Escapes and Mazda Tribute are super useful little rigs.)

We had an 03 - my advice would be to run far and fast once things start going. These can wallet suck with the best of them, and they are a pain to work on. Trade it and get something, anything else. IIRC correctly alternator replacement was 4 figures, something like 8 hrs labor when ours went. Halfshaft had to come out to get at it.

Yep anyone who thought it was body on frame has been misled.

Your 2009 Escape is a unibody platform. So are the current Escape, Edge, and Explorer. The only body-on-frame Ford SUV is the Expedition.

While your 2009 Escape V6 does have more cylinders, both the 1.5 and 2.0 liter EcoBoost turbo 4 cylinders in the 2017 Escape are more powerful. The 1.5 makes 179 hp to your 171, and the 2.0 makes 245.

Why do you think you need a body-on-frame truck platform? Because you don’t have one now, and their main benefits are off-road capability and/or towing capacity.

The only not-huge, not-super expensive body-on-frame truck SUVs that are still being made are the Toyota 4Runner and Jeep Wrangler. Both of which don’t have awd, and instead have part time shift-on-the-fly 4ws (the exception being the 4Runner Limited which does have awd). If you’re mostly interested in on-road foul weather capability, anything without awd is a downgrade.

Book time for the alternator is 3hrs. I replaced the one on my old one 3 times (first was DOA, 2nd died in 6 months). A good garage should only have charged a few hundred. It is a POA though and the whole pass side hub and axle has to come off.

The exhaust is likely the flex pipe from the headers to the main exhaust piping. It failed on my old escape and started leaking. I also had a rattle of the heat shield in the engine. I had an 05 which I couldn’t kill, though I did the alternator 3 times which is a PITA.

If it’s paid off, you’d be better served to keep fixing it. Typically anyway. Think of the repair bills you’ve paid out and add up what you think the worst payout will be and look at that cost over a years time. Likely you’ll still be way ahead of another monthly payment. I’ve seen these escapes run up over 200k and still be in decent shape. So you should be able to get some more life out of it.

My horse power is 240 in the current escape, why do you think it’s only 171?

You know, I quick glanced at the specs and that’s the rating on the 4-cylinder 2009 Escape, not the V6.

Anyway, the rest of what I said still applies. Your Escape is not a “truck frame,” and the 2.0 EcoBoost 2017 Escape has similar power rating to your current one.

Yeah, the 2.0 ecoboost only comes in the top models though, so that’s a 30k car. The 1.5 ecoboost comes with the S and SE escapes. That’s my biggest hang up. So bummed. I’m mentioning this because I’m looking at buy or fixing what I have. 1500$ for the repair.....

Why do you think you need a truck platform? Because literally the only sorta-reasonably priced options for that are the 4Runner and Wrangler. Everything else is a crossover, including your Escape (which is a car platform, just a boxy looking one).

If you’re mostly talking about you want something that has similar power, utility and size to your Escape, then your options are an Escape 2.0 Ecoboost, or a Kia Sportage SX Turbo.

Do you need to get something brand new?

I had to look at the specs, the later 1st gen Escapes got a 240 hp V6.

I’m looking at the Escape right now, same as before. The Escape 2.0 Ecoboost looks like a reasonable engine, however they are only selling it in the more premium models. It doesn’t come in the Escape until you get to the Titanium which is 30k. I know that I have to at least have that 2.0 ecoboost, the 1.5 ecoboost is just too weak for me.
