Finally got my little Fiesta back from Germany. 1 mile from the pick-up location (in MD, 3 hours from home) it decided to ‘overheat’ on the on-ramp. I had it towed to the dealership and they told me they couldn’t look at it that night as it was 4 pm on a Friday. So I had to get a hotel in Columbia, MD for the night. Next day around noon they call to tell me everything was alright and my car was good to go, fixed under warranty. They claimed it was a computer issue due to a pinched wire on the harness and sent me on my way.

Everything was awesome, I drove it for the next week with no issues until I was coming home from school one day and it overheated again. I was livid, got it towed to the dealer and got a ride home. The next day I get a call saying that I need a new motor and that it would be covered under warranty. Ended up taking 3 weeks longer than they had originally told me and they refused to give me a rental car or even tell me what was wrong. When I finally picked it up they told me that there was coolant in cylinders 1 & 2 and that the mechanic who worked on it wasn’t there to explain it.

Kind of a pain in the ass but at least the FiST has a new heart with no miles.

My buddies FoST lost its engine at 17k... And then again at 25k... these engines are great until they’re not.

Exactly, I was great for the first three years when it lived in Europe. It must hate America because now it’s got issues.

Huh....this makes me lose some respect for the FiST...never drove one, and have only seen a handful in person. BUT....if brand new engines in new cars are failing only after that small amount of miles, how does that bode for those engines that make it even later in life? Are they going to be even more failure prone?

Back from germany, euro plates, Is your fiesta a US model or a Euro model?

US Spec, I could’ve gotten a Euro Spec 3-door but I knew I was coming home eventually.

I really wish we got the 3 door here in the US.

It is a sweet little car and I do love mine. That being said, long term reliability might be questionable. I haven’t had any other real issues with mine and from browsing the forums I haven’t seen others with the same or even similar issues.

Now that the engine has been replaced and the resale value is almost non-existent I’ll be keeping it until it is dead.

I like having 4 doors, easier to throw shit in the back seat or when I REALLY have to drive people it makes things easier.

Yeah, issues like that where they replace the engine at such a low number of miles, I almost think there should legally be monetary compensation as well, in a way. You just lost a crap ton of resale value through no fault of your own and through mechanical failure from poor quality/engineering...

The above being completely unlikely to ever happen, but it would make sense, legally, in theory, eh?

“Cars?”

this is one car. defects do happen. it’s not like because one guy you know had an engine failure in a FiST, that means they all are going to fail.

I wouldn’t condemn the car, at least not at first. I know how younger people treat these cars. Someone I knew of in high school got a brand-new GMC Syclone (courtesy of his parents) and he blew up engine after engine after engine after transmission after transmission after transfer case after transfer case. Because he literally beat the ever-loving shit out of that poor thing.

His had it happen - OppoResidenToyotaGuy’s friend had it happen even sooner (TWICE). I’ve also heard of it happening elsewhere as well (an acquaintance works at the Ford dealership as a tech in the city from here).

Yes, I know and agree with you that one or two cars does not a crisis make, but it seems more prevalent than I would’ve thought - some quick searching of a few Ford forums shows several have threads or one thread with a number of posts mentioning Ecoboost engine failures.

That being said, I was probably a little overzealous with my comment, so I apologize. Still makes me a little leery though.

I just know these Ecoboosts are just ehh on reliability long term.

Apple ford in Columbia? That’s where I bought my FiST you could have shacked up at our place (maybe, probably stranger on the internet but we could have gotten drinks!)

We’ll considering the turbos are going out... And my parents have a customer that needs a water pump and head gasket on a car just of warranty that’s going to take 30 something hours to fix...

If you don’t understand that high compression turbo engines are not going to be as reliable... you have a lot to learn about cars...

I find the lack of explanation from the mechanic after changing the engine disconcerting to say the least.

I’ve worked in the auto industry as an engineer for 18 years now. I’m pretty sure I know a bit more about them than you think I do.
