RE-11 or RE-71R?

I’ve tried the “less sticky tire makes it more fun” trick, and I disagree. I have the current set for winter, so a true summer tire will be fine. These will be daily driven, autocrossed maybe a couple of times, and abused in the mountains as much as possible.

I agree. I run Nitto NT555 G2s on my GTO, and believe me, they are a hoot. Just enough to hold the corners or slide around if so required. But then again I have torque.

I’m about to have 240wtq going through the front wheels of a 2600lbs car, so I need a little more grip.

Do super sports come in the proper size? Because if so, the answer is super sports.

I’m thinking of getting some Firestone firehawlk Indy 500's ($75/tire) in 205/55/-R16. The Firehawlks look a lot like the RE-11's. I drive about 4k a year in the summer so tread wear is not an issue for me, It’s fun to drive on sticky tires.

Ah, makes sense. I’ve got about 380 lb-ft tq to the rears.

I’d get the 71R, the 11s were good before the 71R came out. Now it’s just old news.

Dunlop Direzza Star Spec 2 (ZII star spec) or BUST! Have them on my miata and my FocuST, and they are so awesome for autoX and HPDE. The tread life seems to be pretty damn good too for a DOT track tire.

However, for daily driving....they are VERY loud. They sort of roar at all speeds, but are surprisingly comfortable.

Generally I agree with you. When I swapped my summers to snows, in a way it was a little more fun because the car was easier to chuck around, but I’m looking forward to swapping the summers back on in a few weeks.

What kind of wet grip and tread life are you hoping to get? Cuz 200 treadwear tires like this are more biased toward dry performance above all else.

If you are going for Jesus tires for autocross go with the 71's.

If you want a longer lasting tire that can be rotated all the way around the car, go with the 11's

Re-71r if you’re mainly autocrossing, Re-11 if you’re DDing with the occasional autocross

From what I’ve heard, the 11's are actually great in the wet. Plus, summer is the dry season, so I’m not too worried even if they weren’t.

I don’t recommend RE-71Rs unless you’re willing to accept that they might be dead by the end of the year depending on how much (performance) driving you do. We had a current-gen WRX in the SCCA region go through two sets in a year because shey DD’d on them, did track days, and ran the entire local autocross schedule (including events in neighboring regions). I think the RE-11A might serve you longer but at the cost of not being made of unicorn tears and pixie dust.

Alternatively, the BFG Sport Comp 2 is a good alternative with longer tread life (and better rain behavior).

I’m in the same boat, if winter ever ends here i need a new set of summer tires for the STi . I really want the Re-71rs because I loved my RE-70s but I’ve heard they are very track oriented and not as good for the street but the RE-11's sidewall is a bit to soft for my tastes..... so i have no answers for you.

In the 50's here today, but the ridge won’t hold long. We should get another 15-30ft of snow this month still.

Since I have drove both. Re-11 was an ok tire its on bar with the old Z1 Start spec and maybe early rs-3. Re71r is on a whole new level. Those crappy 140 tread ware tires that came on the fiesta are JUNK.

Granted I am waiting to see what the Rival S 1.5 is like. Re71 is good but I got 10k miles out of the last set. That is with 160 autox runs on courses that are not easy on tires. I did finish them off to the cord after two hours at Roebling Road. The second set is about 50% with about 8k miles and 80 autocross runs.

So question is how many miles do you want these tires to last?

I like the look of 16s on the FiST. The bolt pattern makes finding wheels a bit of a pain. I think when I get new wheels I’m going to get the Advanti DST Storm S1 in 17x8.

If they’ll work for you that’s fine. I find that sometimes folks are a little too quick to jump into this tire category when it may not be the best choice for them so that’s usually my default response. Just in case. I ran Hankook RS2s on my Miata back in the day but since then I’ve tended towards tires in the “max performance” category on Tire Rack with a little tread life and comfort.

I got 15k miles out of 140 tread wear for what it’s worth.

RE11 all the way. I bought them as my spare set for autocrossing and occasional spirited dr Bing or track days. RE71Rs are Autocross specials and despite what is stamped on them they will not last like a 200 treadwear.
