Kinja'd!!!

Apparently the Oscar-winning Moonlight actor Trevante Rhodes is in talks to play John Stewart in the upcoming Green Lanter movie. When asked about it, he said he wanted to use the opportunity to get his face out there so that people would then watch his movies that he actually cares about, like Moonlight. I can’t be the only person that thinks that kind of thinking is awful, right?

I’m really starting to miss when these movies were only watched by nerds and actors thought they were risking their careers to play the parts...

I think he’s right. The first movie I went to see at the movies was Transformers when I was 12. Shit movie but I enjoyed it at the time and it gave me an interest in movies. Since then my taste evolved and I can appreciate more refined or independent cinema.

Kids growing up with these superhero movies may do the same. They help foster an interest in film. Theres no reason it cant do the same for an actor.

Because the last one was so great because RR cared!

Geeze that was shit, but still not as bad as BvS.

Movies are a business. Fanservice and “accuracy” are secondary.

It sucks that he came right out and said he’d like it to be a springboard, but plenty of actors do nerd culture stuff just for the money or career opportunities. Do you think Stallone really gave a shit about Judge Dredd when he made that steaming pile?

It’s a DCU movie, so I’m sure it will have the opposite effect and ruin his career.

Don’t do it, Rhodes!

Eh, that seems like a pretty standard actor canned response. They either say they do popular films for the money so they can do the art house things they care about, or they say something like “it was my dream to be X character ever since I was a kid, and this is so cool and awesome to finally be a superhero.” Personally, I find the latter more grating. It’s very rare to have an actor shit all over the character he plays, which is why I love Daniel Craig almost as much as I love his Bond.

I agree. Thankfully, I don’t think the attitude is predominant. Lots of nerd roles go to actors who are clearly geeking out about them. RDJ wanted to play Iron Man for years before he was cast, and Andrew Garfield showed up to a Comicon in a fully Spidey suit before they started filming.

That’s because in the DC Universe, Ryan Reynolds is Wally West, not Hal Jordan.

Superhero movies were never really picked up by actors or studios that really understood the comics, starting all the way back with Tim Burton’s batman and some of the superman movies, I don’t think that this is anything really new.

Doesn’t make it good or bad, but at this point I wouldn’t really be surprised to read this.

I also think there might be a culture of despondency among actors in superhero films, especially DC ones, because they know that no matter how good or bad their performance is, it will get heavily edited in post production, reshoots, and they will have to deal with at least 2-3 script rewrites. Ryan Reynolds put in a lot of free word on Deadpool and RDJ was already a massively successful actor (and wealthy enough that he could afford to turn down / negotiate a contract with marvel) but even he hasn’t really had his heart in the movies since The Avengers. Will Smith might have that kind of power with Deadshot but he’s already known for so many other iconic roles that it’s not likely to make much of an impact.
