I watched that Desert Raiders Dakar doc that was on the FP a while back, and I noticed some things:

Kinja'd!!!

Why does the Quattro have this goofy raised roof? I thought at first it was spare tire storage, but it’s not tall enough. This site theorizes that it’s to accommodate extra bracing and a large interior vent.

Two cabs!

The DAF “Twincab” was built for promotional purposes. I saw this truck in the video about the ‘87 rally, but another site says it ran in ‘84, driven by Jan de Rooy. It had two engines, good for 800 hp. Maybe it was run again in subsequent years by different drivers, because they used to do stuff like that.

But de Rooy drove this beast in ‘87:

The aero! Something? I don’t know? I love it, though. It’s bonkers. Another twin engine, this one made 1000 hp.

I think this cutaway is from a different year. ‘86, maybe, according to the Polish website caption. There are a few visible differences, especially with the “wing.”

Anyway, this is all kinda Google translated from ancient websites, so feel free to correct what I got wrong. I just thought it was really neat to see what they were coming up with back then.

I’m pretty sure the Twincab, or “dubbele kop” in Dutch, ran multiple times, once at the hands of Jan de Rooy in 1984, and later as a back-up/service truck, not fully sure if it was still around by 1987 though.

The Turbotwin 1 and 2 (1986 and 1987) are basically the same chassis with some updates, if I’m not mistaken. It is rumoured that it’s fuel consumption was around 1 kilometer per litre, for comparison: the 2016 de Rooy Iveco does around 2 kilometers per liter.

There are some really good books (Hart van Zand) and documentaries (De woestijn bleef leeg) about the Dakar adventures of Jan de Rooy, and the demise of the Daf programme, all are in Dutch though.

Looks like I’m learning Dutch! Yeah, I’m wondering if they got that Twincab footage from a different year. They also had some footage of an old FJ running, and I couldn’t find stills of that anywhere.

That is very well possible, because in old entry lists I can only find it for 1984 and 1985. In 1986 and 1987 they were running these as back-up:
