So, the moneymaking design gurus at Astro decided to take decent movements, package them beautifully, build a brand, and... do it fuckin right. And I bought one (cheap on sale). The colors were right.

Kinja'd!!!

They nailed the brand ID with the stacked PVD rings on their first effort, and they’ve expanded pretty nicely. No idea what their production numbers look like.

The band is silicone, not really replaceable with something else, which kinda stinks. I don’t like the band or clasp very much. It’s too big, even on the smallest hole. Gotta get a set of leather punches, I guess. The clasp is a stupid PITA.

Not a particularly pretty movement, and it clatters around, compared to the Tissot I’ve had for a while . I don’t really care. The consistent matteness of the black on different materials is pretty amazing. The machining and coloring of the top inside ring is absolutely amazing. As much as I’d love their diver, no way am I gonna blow big money on it. But they used the same machining on the bezel of the diver on the inside ring of this one, and did it with color.

Overall: I’m pretty impressed. There are details that only eyes or a big camera can catch on this, and they are: beautifully done. I kinda don’t want to wear it much, given how much I’ve nicked and dented the shit out of the Tissot.

This has been your momentary distraction.

There should be some typical spring bar pins holding that band on, in which case you can use a very small flat-head screwdriver or spring bar tool to swap the old band out and put a new one in.

They make some seriously kickass watches— packaging off-the-shelf Japanese movements in extremely well-designed bodies.

Yeah-- the thing is that the arms are really narrow, so unless I were replacing it with a super-narrow band, it’d look ridiculous.

Nice, I’ll have to look them up.
