Hot takes. Audi be scared man.

The Stinger looks better, I’m sure it’ll cost less, is a similar size/shape, is RWD biased AWD, and is going to be faster in GT form 0-60 than the A5 Sportback. Sure the S5 will win. But the Kia is a great alternative to the A5.

Watch your ass Audi.

You’re saying Kia’s new performance variant 5-door coupe is going to be quicker than Audi’s base model 5-door coupe? Astonishing!

Yeah and Audi should be pissed about that.

Their base model Stinger with the 2.0 may beat the A5 0-60. I’m positive the 3.3 can beat Audi’s base though.

Engine options in the Stinger per kia.com:

POWERTRAIN:

2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cyl engine, 255 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque

3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, 365 hp and 376 lb.-ft. of torque

The Stinger looks better

That is quite the hot take. It has a certain smell to it, too.

You’re also completely ignoring the interior, badge presence, dealer experience, and so many other things more important to people dropping $45k+ on a car.

I wonder how much this matters for Audi. I don’t really think Audi cares. In fact, the pricing is much more of a concern than power. If you look at Europe where Audi sells really well, most people buy base-level diesels which aren’t even close to being performance cars.

Why should Audi be mad about that? Audi has shown that a 3.0L supercharged engine putting out 333hp can sneak to 60mph in 4.7 seconds in a 4,300lb car. Kia can’t manage that with an extra 30hp and 0.3L of displacement.

Orth Hedrick already said the Stinger GT will “probably” be under $50,000. The base model A5 Sportback is expected to come in at $43,000. You’ll still have to spend more on the Kia to outrun the Audi (0-60 in 5.3s in the 2.0T base model), and even then, the 365hp AWD Kia performance sedan is only beating a base-model 4-banger Audi by 0.2 seconds to 60mph, even though it has an extra 110hp.

Audi (and by extension, BMW) have nothing to worry about. the Stinger GT is too expensive to steal 430i GC and A5 Sportback sales, and too slow to steal 440i GC and S5 Sportback sales. Plus, not to be rude, but people spending $50,000 or more on a performance sedan aren’t going to buy a Kia. The people that would spend that kind of money already purchased a Chevy SS, and you know how well those sales held up.

Kudos to Kia for making the Stinger GT a real thing, but I don’t think Audi is quaking in their boots over the South Koreans yet.

It’ll all depend on the price tag really. If they get the entry Stinger down to low 30s, they win a lot of sales.

Time will tell, but I’m thinking the base Stinger is going to be a $35,000 car. That’s enough to steal away C-Class and 3 Series buyers, but not that many. Most people scrimp and scrape to get into a 320i as it is, they want that roundel on the hood or nothing.

I need to check to see if these come with kia’s 10-year 100k powertrain warranty.

As much as I like the Stinger, I think it’ll be base models that sell. If the fully loaded price overlaps the low end of the German marques, the majority of buyers are probably going to go for the more prestigious badge.

4 Gran Coupe = 182.6" long, 110.6" wheelbase, 71.9" wide, 55.3" high

A5 Sportback = 186.3" long, 111.2" wheelbase, 72.6" wide, 54.6" high

Stinger = 190.2" long, 114.4" wheelbase, 73.6" wide, height unknown

A7 = 195.6" long, 114.7" wheelbase, 75.2" wide, 55.9" high

Interestingly, the rwd Stinger has a mechanical LSD while the awd Stinger has brake “torque vectoring” on the open rear diff.

I’m like the perfect potential Stinger customer. I like cars from premium brands like BMW because I like how they drive but I don’t like the negative stigma of driving a fancy brand like a BMW. Especially since my BMW is blue and low and tinted and has big wheels.

For every one person who realizes I’m a car guy who bought a used BMW for the price of any number of regular normal brand new cars, there’s 5 more who are like, “whoa, must be nice to be able to afford one of those .”

Plus my wife thinks my car is stupid but she tolerates it.

Back when I had a Mazdaspeed 6, it was the opposite, and was completely under the radar to most people.

I’m not getting rid of my car anytime soon, because I have a bunch of mods on it and I plan to keep it a long time. But the Stinger is definitely on my radar for my next car (in several years).

while kia and the other korean have made HUGE leaps in the past few year, they arent quite up to audi standards in terms of fit and finish yet.

as for: it will last more then 5 days out of warranty? LOL. they will all break and start to rattle before the warrenty is past the first month.

I own a Kia now, and for a lower price (comparing brand new only) I basically got the performance I wanted, giving up a bit better ride quality to save thousands. Who knows, the Stinger might be the one that nails the whole package, but regardless of how good the car is people will write it off for the badge alone, and that effect only gets worse with price.

I for one am extremely excited that this is coming to Mexico. I am quite intrigued by how the people will perceive it.

Ever since Kia arrived in about 2013 or 2014 IIRC, they have been seen as state of the art and downright advanced. People see them as extremely innovative, and somewhat premium given that the Mexican market never had bad Kias. Currently the best selling small SUV is the new Sportage, and the Forte is getting close to the top of the compact segment sales due to it bing built in Monterrey (The city where I currently live).

I saw both of these at the Chicago auto show a couple of weeks ago, and really love both. They’re right in my wheelhouse of what I’m looking for in my next car. Looking forward to driving both, but I’m a bit disappointed that Kia apparently won’t offer a 3 pedal version. Seems to me that it would help their credibility, and I really am hoping for 3 pedals in my next car. Either way, I hope Kia succeeds with this car—

Yeah it would have almost been smarter for them to wait before entering the US until only a few years ago, but hindsight is 20/20. Their cars are just about as good as any other asian manufacturer at this point and they have more features for the money. They don’t have as good of a reputation in the US (as you know) but that’s the same perception GM and Ford have to fight from the 90's early 2000's.

I mean the engines, layout, and options are so similar that I think Kia really has a competitor here. I think a lot of people are right though, price and perception of dropping that level of cash inside a typically low-level Kia dealership that’s pushing $99 a month loans is going to be a challenge.

I know it’s a personal opinion, but I say the Stinger looks a hell of a lot better than the A5/S5 too

Actually, allegedly the Sportback will offer 3 pedals in both the A5 and S5 versions. In the US. I ’ ll believe it when I see it, but I ’ m hopeful. Yes, it ’ s a reach, sales - wise for Kia to include that (they probably don ’ t have a manual that can handle the torque of that motor??), but I was hoping they would do it in order to build credibility, perhaps. And, to add on, the comparable BMW (4 GC) doesn ’ t offer a manual, either, although you can get it in the 3 series sedan.
