You can pick up a Mk. 3 for cheap...for now. I don’t know why but I have really been craving one of these. This is a luxo-barge coupe that was born on the eve of the malaise era. That means that if you pick up an early one, the 460ci V8 makes 365hp and 500 (!) torque.

Kinja'd!!!

Tell me I’m crazy for wanting one of these things.

You’re not. Except inasmuch as Town Car is life.

Keep in mind that’s 365 hp using wonky recording techniques and that the car weighs almost 5,000 lbs (holy shit). But yes, I have a weird want for one as well. There was a rust colored one for sale near me with orange velour interior. It was amazing.

You’re not. I want one as well. My wife thinks I’m nuts though and had to hold me back from buying a much rougher one on CL last year.

That’s true, I forgot about the whole gross horsepower thing. Still, you could probably stick anything you want under that gigantic hood.

My fiance things it’s a grandpa car...maybe it is, but you’d have to be one cool ass grandpa to be driving one of these today.

Yeah, you’d have lots of space to work with. You could also do whatever you want to the engine depending on the emissions situation in your county.

You’re completely wrong. Power doesn’t matter in a car like that. Smoothness and relaxed engines matter.

The luxo barges are all about relaxing the driver. Seating like a couch, overboosted steering and brakes that require no effort, power that comes on softly and at very low revs, transmissions that shift slowly, suspensions that completely round of or hide even the sharpest of bumps... Not only does it seem to discourage aggressive driving, it seems to actively convince you that you don’t need to drive aggressively.

You can’t find luxury like that anymore.

Stylish cars, but this one needs less flamboyant tires.

I had a friend when I was growing up in the 90's whose dad drove us around in a late 70's Mk V Continental Town Coupe. The older kids called it a grandpa car but 12 year old me thought it was a gangster car. I loved it.
