Car people are no fun

What happened to stuff being cool, with no qualifications? I miss the days when we could admire a car because it looked cool or drove fast, not because of its facts or figures. When it was about an intangible emotion rather than a Nurburgring time or power to weight ratio. That’s the way I like to judge cars, based on how they make me feel , not how their stat sheet looks on Wikipedia.

Cool car for your time

Yeah, that’s really cool. I like it a lot, and it’s the main reason I want to see one in person

Man you are in the wrong place to complain about this. We get excited about some guy changing the shocks on his ancient Tercel wagon, some guy painting his lawnmower in racing livery or some guy making a fiberglass hood for his Baretta.

Feel is all it’s about really. But facts and figures make good tiebreakers.

This opinion brought to you by a guy who doesn’t care if he never gets to sit in a Veyron and is more interested in driving his widely-panned pickup, and whose only interest in Ferrari’s is directed to the 355 and F40. Oh, and the FF, because weird.

I like to rate cars based on the SEG quotient.

...how much it gives the driver a shit eating grin.

The definitive rating scheme for cars is how fast you can go while still spinning the tires under power.

Mine does that in a weird way. Most of the time I’m just shifting at 3k, driving slowly around town, nbd. Then I’ll flip it to sport mode, floor it, and just start laughing cause it’s faster than I remember.

I spin tires at the top of 2nd

It doesn’t even need to be fast. Have you ever seen anyone in a Morgan three wheeler having a bad day?

I surprised myself and my 16 yo son by spinning the tires shifting into fourth the other day. Of course, I was simply demonstrating for him how you should definitely not drive.

Be cooler if you could do it at the top of 3rd. But you are already cooler than people who can only spin in 1st.

Yeah, i’ve been driving a 300 hp RWD car for 10+ years now as my daily and I feel like i’ve come to this weird impasse with trying to pick out my next vehicle. I don’t want something slower because progress and moving up in the world, yet....I dont want something that much faster, because I live in Seattle and realistically 300-350 HP is about the max I can really exploit on wet pavement. But i also don’t want the same thing i already have because that’s boring and why would I do that.

Part of me wants to say “Fuck it” and attempt to DD a Caterham.

Well they never seem to be a driver, just a douche who got a car for attention, at least in CA. They also have no idea how to work on car from what I can tell.

I’m not a fan of dealers and other organisations bringing company cars to meets, but let’s face it, that is still more interesting than no P1/LaFerrari showing up at all.

The meet I went to in San Jose this past Sunday was a reasonable compromise. There is always some dealer lackey parading a brand new exotic with his bros (as if it’s his car), but there’s still a large gathering of various marques.

I’m a bit torn—I still think a car meet should be an owner’s event. Where people share adventures involving their own cars and not gawking at who has the most expensive car.

Well in Marin we have some cool people, you can see their page, we have some old Ferraris etc. but they guys work on them and one of the guys has a Gullwing too and he drives the shit out of them at classic rallies and works on them. I can tell right away when a douche isn’t so much interested in driving as having a symbol. One time an older Japanese guy showed up with an LFA, he only stayed 15min but I got the feeling he just wanted to show other petrolheads something you don’t normally see, but you can also see the guy with a new 458 and you can tell by a simple conversation that he didn’t do anything with cars before, he bought the one he thought he should get because he got some cash. I used to work in military intelligence/DIA so I have sort of wired myself to read a person the second I meet them.

There is a difference, some tech bro that wants to show off isn’t someone who would like to work on cars but hasn’t had the opportunity. You just have to meet them and listen to their ridiculous conversations. They are mainly concerned with detailing the car and expensive waxes...

Yeah. I like rare cars, but that brings a bunch of pitfalls as well. I used to have a 1988 Celica All-Trac, which was pretty rare, made working on it a nightmare (also turbocharging and awd from the 80's helped in that regard.)

Still, i do miss the coolness associated with owning something weird and rare.
