Kinja'd!!!

This is one of the most recent episodes of Criminal minds, Collision Course. The episode began with two car accidents with pedestrians getting hit. The drivers said they didn ’ t have control over the car as it took over driving for them to run down the pedestrians. Cue the lines that let me know that I was going to get upset during this episode.

“ Same make and model vehicle, two drivers saying they lost control, this sounds like they ’ re thinking hacker. ”

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

“ Could be, most cars made after 2009 regardless of make or model are vulnerable to hacking ”

The main plot of the episode (spoiler warning if you had your mind set on watching this episode) was that the killer wanted both to kill the pedestrian and watch the driver suffer throughout the “ hacking ” . He would hack into the driver ’ s phone (he only did it to cars with phone mounts) to watch them, hack into their dash cam to watch the road or use security cameras, and would be able to control steering, brakes, and throttle remotely. Pretty talented guy.

So after the ridiculous line about vulnerable vehicles, the three/four different cars they then use are the following:

2013 “ Meridian ” which looks like a 05 - 11 Lexus.

Kinja'd!!!

2016 “ Shiloh ” which I think is a 96 - 06 Galant(?)

Kinja'd!!!

They never make up a name for this one but it ’ s a 93 - 00 Mercedes C - Class

Kinja'd!!!

Then, to end the episode the killer kidnaps a woman and from the passenger seat, remotely drives them around. The car they ’ re in is supposed to be the same as the first vehicle, a 2013 “ Meridian ” . The exterior shots they show are definitely of a 06 - 12 Altima.

Kinja'd!!!

While trying to track them down the following exchange takes place-

“ Well, can you hack directly into the car? ”

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

“ Well, of course I ’ ve already tried that because that, you know, what I do, but he ’ s put a firewall around the vehicle ’ s controller area network. ”

What the hell is a vehicle ’ s controller area network?? (Edit, CAN - Bus, I ’ m an idiot)

Anyway, the killer wants to drive into a wall at full speed with both of them in the car. Of course the BAU tech analyst comes to the rescue and engages the brakes by successfully hacking his car and everyone lives happily ever after.

This is so dumb. I miss the old days where they would hack into your phone, emit some high frequency sound that stimulates your aggression cortex and numbs your reasoning, and then you become a maniac everytime that hacker called your phone. So much simplier!

Controller Area Network is what CAN stands for.

I get that cars are heavily computer controlled but having a computer =/= wireless hacking, as far as I know, that’s not how it works. A car’s computer is self contained for this exact reason, if my car’s engine was just out there on the internet where it has no right to be, I’d be scared, but it isn’t so pffft.

Hi, the 90s called, they want their hacking plot line back.

On a related note, for some reason this reminds me of the X-Files episode where LCDs keep telling people to kill, even though that didn’t involve hacking. That was a great episode.

Hahaha this episode is so dumb!

If the made up names were funny, like Sexus Maxima and Hoondai PX90 or something, I’d still give em props.

But nope.

When you I see things like this and think a show is bad, I remember there’s Scorpion.

Researchers have already shown there are several ways to gain access to the CAN bus remotely. One group hacked in through the tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and were able to send commands while the vehicle was in motion, although the range is very short. Others have gained access to vehicles via the internet by connecting to them through their internet-enabled entertainment systems.

While your car may not be on the internet, almost every car today has computer systems with more than one wireless component and many of the cars built today are connected to a wireless network of some sort. As we move into an age where cars are expected to navigate the world and talk to each other in order to improve traffic flow, we can expect more vulnerabilities to be revealed.

The controller area network bit is the one thing they got right. That’s what CAN-BUS stands for.

It’s not surprising that they renamed the cars. That helps to protect them from libel claims by the manufacturers. We can laugh about it because we recognize the vehicles.

As others pointed out, the CAN bus is real. It’s also vulnerable to hacking as several researchers have pointed out. They may be stretching the truth a bit in the name of drama, but they aren’t far off the mark when they are talking about the amount of remote control possible in some cars. Controls for the throttle and brakes are in most cars made today. Controls for steering are becoming more common. Any car that can park itself has all of the drive-by-wire control systems in place to allow for full remote control.

That’s how it is supposed to be but now manufacturers are connecting parts of the CAN network to the internet which gives potential access to every computer on the car.

I remember watching a portion of an episode and they were on a runway in a Ferrari and they were shifting all F&F like, as in upshifts and downshifts for no logical reason and some other bullshit.... after that scene I turned it off and haven’t watched again. If you can’t get something as simple as a car chase correct, then piss off. So yeah, it could’ve been worse.

Mrs McMike watches it, I can’t stand it.

I will walk through the room and catch a few minutes of it, and it’s just fucking ridiculous.

You know those scenes where the heros are trying to defuse a bomb? It’s only 30 seconds or so on the timer, and it takes five minutes and they figure it out at .0001 seconds on the clock?

That’s this show, except that it’s an hour long. Except instead of trying to figure out what wire to cut, they ...

I can’t. I can’t even describe it.   It’s so bad.

Watching Criminal Minds anymore is just comical. It’s not not as bad as CSI Miami was, but it’s headed that way.

Yeah, I really got into it in the earlier seasons and now I’m just watching because I’m invested into the characters. The plots have needed to get a little out there in order to keep pumping out new episodes.

I understand why the renamed the cars, but couldn’t believe that they screwed up the continuity of the first/last car. Then the other cars they used we very much before 2009 which was the year mentioned in the beginning as to when they became vulnerable.

Discontinuity aside, I guess I don’t really see the issue here. Everyone involved is pretending to be someone/something they are not. Why be factual about the cars when we aren’t being factual about everything else? How much reality has to be in a fictional story?

Sounds like the writers were playing Watch_Dogs and didn’t have any original ideas for a script.
