Kinja'd!!!

My little 3-er wagon has been further off-road than most new Range Rovers. What you can’t see is that the road up to this little shelter was steep, washed out, muddy, and had a big water bar I had to pick my way over carefully. Still, this 2" of soft mud was more of a challenge than most city-dwelling RR’s face on a daily basis.

It’s even better going up that kind of crap in a lowered Miata lol. This past weekend the airbnb i was staying at for a ski trip had a nice steep and rutted mud road to get to the top. Had no traction issues but the bottom of my car kept hitting the ground which was no bueno. Kinda fun though to just walk straight up it without issue. Would have preferred it to be frozen though, then it would have been real easy work.

I’d love to do some rallyX with my car. I did an open practice session with a slalom / skid pad setup at Team O’Neil a few weeks ago, but no timing or anything. Probably not the best thing to be doing with my 150k-mile daily driver and kid hauler...

I ran over a strip of grass backing out of the garage this morning so that is enough off roading for my Rover today.

Was it damp grass too?!

As damp as being doused with a sprinkler system for five minutes could make it.

So what kind of loaner are you driving while your Range Rover is in the shop getting repaired?

You mean like I did with my 114k- mile daily driver kid hauler? Hahahaha

I actually had just upgraded all of the suspension at around 105k miles: shocks/struts, all control arms, tie rod ends, and sway bar links. So I was pretty confident in all the components taking a bit of a beating. Maybe they won’t all last 100k miles this time around haha.

I took it out twice for RallyX and I purchased a Rally specific car a few months ago so it won’t be rally-ed again. Was a great way to see if it was something I was really into before selling my 68 Montego and buying a Rally Car.

haha, nice! Well, my car survived O’Neils, too but I guess I wouldn’t want to do that on a regular basis.

When I sold my ‘01 wagon to get the near-identical ‘03, I really wanted to keep the ‘01 as a rallyX car. Or parts, or a spare car, or whatever. But I couldn’t quite convince my wife to keep another vehicle around... The money was better put toward the newer car. It would have been fantastic, though, to have a rally car that was the same as my DD.

Yeah eventually things will break, once or twice on a daily isn’t a big deal though. I bought the 68 Montego before we had kids so that was an investment a long time ago and I basically told the wife I wanted to sell it for a rally car her opinion on it was ok but your budget is whatever you sell the Montego for, which seemed fair to me.

Yep, I’m able to drive an “older” car (it’s all relative I guess) and deal with occasional repairs because I am good with preventative stuff, noticing issues before they cause a breakdown, and I also have a trusted independent shop that I can drive to on my way to work, leave the car and walk to work, then pick it up at the end of the day. They did a wheel bearing for me last week on the day I was supposed to take the car to VT. That’s key.

Yeah it helps a lot to have an indy mechanic you trust.

I’m hoping mine hangs on to the 175k mark. After that I’m fine with moving on from it. And we should be car payment free (wife’s truck paid off as well by then) so we can start over and get me a car payment again haha. I have to do brakes on the Milan soon.

My Range Rover hasn’t been back to the dealer yet but I have only had it three months. My boyfriend bought a Range Rover Sport in June of 2016 and it has been back only for two oil changes. He got a Jaguar XJ the first time and an Evoque convertible the second time.

For me it’s how I own vehicles. I’ve never financed a car, I buy things old enought that I can pay cash. I try to always look for a deal on a nice example of something, and jump on it as I can, so I can get a good deal buying and get a decent price when I sell, too. Pre-kids it was even easier to just drive my old truck in between other vehicles. But even now, I’ll just overlap rather than rely on the old truck. Doing my own work and having a trusted shop or two is essential to this plan.

Our latest plan is to get an older suburban for those times when we all want to go somewhere with a lot of stuff, or just any time in the winter when I need a truck. Then if one of our cars is at the shop, we drive the suburban. My wife’s car is nearing 200k and mine is at 155k, but both cars have tons of life in them. So long as I don’t keep rallying the wagon.

These are good plans, I’ve considered the same. I also want to use a big older burbon to pull the rally Capri if it gets that intense so having something that’s big and tow-capable is a great thing. I can also keep getting good gas mileage to and from work. Problem is justifying 4 vehicles....lol

Ha, yes true. We have 3 vehicles if you count my old truck. A suburban would be 4, technically. But my family always had more cars than people when I was younger, none of them were ever all that special. Like, when my sister was in college we had:

1985 Ford F150 w/ plow

1979 Ford F100, all original - summer only

1993 Plymouth Voyager (hand-me-down from grampa)

1995 Dodge Caravan

1996 Honda Civic (hand-me-down from grandma)

1990 Honda Civic

This is all at the same time. And there were only 4 of us in the family. (side note: all were manual except the dodge caravan)

Cool line up. I have a bit of a vehicle storage issue where I live, the potential hauler would need to be street parked unless I can get to that driveway expansion I’m wanting on. Trying not to be “that guy” that blocks the sidewalks.

haha, yes... the joys of living in civilization. I’m firmly outside of that. My parents, even more so, and they have two barns to assist in their hoarding.

I don’t have any barns or garages. That’s a necessity before having any more vehicles to manage; leaving them outside all the time if you’re not driving them regularly... not good.

Yeah, that’s my situation. I want to expand the driveway around the side of the house to be able to pull another car alongside the house even. Maybe one day expand garage width.

Red = property lines

Blue = driveway, box where the garage will be.

I need to fire up the chain saw. We’ve actually cut a lot of trees even since this image was grabbed.
