Real talk. We still have my dad’s original MacBook Pro in a box somewhere. The battery life is shit and the screen is dim, but it still works.

We still use a 2010 MacBook Pro at home, maybe faster than my 2 year old dell work machine.

Yeeeah! I had one very much like that which finally ended up with a motherboard issue (after I’d already upgraded). Rocking an early ‘13 15" Retina now. I’ve gotten in the habit of buying the top of the line of the previous generation when they’re on clearance after the new hotness gets released. Saved ~$700 off original list on this one.

Never had one but I did love the this generation of Pro. The keyboard just felt so satisfying to use. So much better than my 13 air.

This is my favorite version of the Pro, I don’t like when they did away with the mouse button in the subsequent versions. I think I need to update this and it’ll be good for few more years. I use a mac mini for my daily needs.

Oh nice! I started using this one with the clam shell closed, so I got a mac mini and Dell monitor to replace it in late 2015. I still really like this computer thought, I wish I could change the internals and keep the things like the keyboard and mouse.

My dell was a workhorse, I beat the shit out of that and it kept working. I might look into a SSD and a software update for this and it should keep working just fine. The lower 2/3 of the screen doesn’t always want to work, but that seems like it only happens after it’s been sitting for a month or two. It’s working fine now that it’s been used for a day or two.

I got a new battery for this in 2013, it’s not very good, but it lasts for an hour or two. The connection between the screen and the GPU isn’t the best at times and sometimes the lower 2/3 of the screen dies. That said, I’ve had it on for 2+ days now and is working flawlessly, I’m thinking about a SSD upgrade now.

Yeah, so I got SMC fan control on it, and with the fans tacked out, it still gets up to 160+ at times.

I had a black Macbook. Got it in 2007, I think, used it until 2012, where I powered it down and left for university.

Two years later, my friend needs to borrow a laptop. I was visiting home, so I told her I’d grab my old Macbook. I open it up to see if it still works, and guess what? I left it in sleep mode. For two years. In a desk. And it had all my tabs where I left them.

Out of my three laptops, it’s my favourite.

I have a ‘09 macbook pro that I replaced with a ‘15 because the screen started crapping out. But since I quit daily using it, its been fine. Go figure. I’m also getting a new, touch bar one this week at work. I’ll have to bring it home and get a photo with all three of them of lined up.

For the foreseeable future I’ll have a Macbook Pro (and an iPhone).

The screen on this goes out at times, by that I mean when I start it up after a month or two of sitting the bottom 2/3 of the screen doesn’t want to talk with the GPU, so I have to mess with the clam shell to get it to work. Now that it’s been on for a day plus, no problems.

I really like my iphone and my mac mini, keeping an Apple as the personal computer for as long as I can.

Not just Macs! My circa-2009 Lenovo ThinkPad T400 is still alive and well, though the WiFi card isn’t playing well with Win 10. Can’t really fault the laptop because it shipped with Vista, transitioned to 7, and when 10 came knocking on the door, well, how could I say no to a free upgrade?

I kept it from my freshman year until my junior year in college before it couldn’t keep up with my workload. My school transitioned to Solidworks and it was pretty exhausting tracking multiple documents on the 14" 1280x800 screen. It was replaced with a 15" T520 that my dad still uses today.

My mom took over it in 2011 until the WiFi issue started cropping up last year. I took it back and I’ve been meaning to upgrade it to an SSD and make it into a Linux machine, but it just won’t die.

These are the standards I’ve noticed Apple provided for the consumer for years before most other companies thought to do so... consumers do not have the time to be bogged down by tech issues. A lot of people give Apple shit about the proprietary stuff. To top it off, customer service is also something to rave about. People gladly pay premiums for these two privileges which are slowly becoming the standard every where. If the product needs too much attention and maintenance, if turn around times with helping customers isn’t fast enough, they will look elsewhere.

I have an 80gb Western Digital 3.5" HDD that I bought new in 2004 for my first personal desktop. I usually let it run 24/7 and that hard drive still works perfectly with no SMART errors....has something like 10 YEARS of powered on time and is the reason why I won’t buy any other brand of hard drive for my own machines...

I still use that drive too, it’s in the upgraded desktop I built for myself in 2008 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 6G RAM, Radeon HD 3850) and is still going strong! All the parts from that machine work great (except the Radeon’s cooling fan has been slowly dying for 5 years - but I have a replacement on hand just in case!) as well despite 24/7 daily use through my second uni degree and sub teaching. I retired it from daily use last January when I got a more up to date system, but it’s still perfectly fine for everyday needs aside from heavier gaming!

Apple gets a lot of crap, and some of it might be justified, but they really do put effort into design. We can argue about their design success and failure and occasional odd idea - but it’s tough to say they don’t think about how things work.

I’ve owned a Mac since the Mac Classic II came out and have used a retina MBP as my only engineering work computer for the last 5 years (upgraded machines once because I wanted to run a 4K monitor). Although I can use NX for MacOS, the interface is bad-Unix, so I run the Windows version through Parallels instead.

Yes, I could buy a PC - even a laptop - that would be faster for the 5% of my work that taxes the hardware. Yes, it would be less expensive to buy...

But I want to spend my time on work and family, not on maintaining a complicated tool, and using a Mac lets me do that, every day.

I bought a beat to shit 2008 MBP over at the Goodwill Outlet for about $5 a couple of years ago. Found a replacement screen for $40 and a new top case for $1. Slapped in some memory and an SSD and this thing runs better than any 9 year old computer should. Amazing is the only word to describe it.

I even found a docking station for it for $20, although I did have to get another power supply with the ‘T’ style connector to use it. It just takes up a lot of desktop space in this configuration.

This thing runs Windows 7 surprisingly well. I’ve even used it to teach my flight training classes and it runs on par with, or faster than, the much newer HP notebooks that the unit bought for this purpose.

I wouldn’t consider 26, so to be 27 to be that young. That said I feel like there are more young people on here than when I was first here, but then again when I first started commenting I was 19.

Since most of oppo is anonymous, sometimes when I learn some personal info about someone, it surprises me. You know how you build a mental picture and then assume things and then they say something that didn’t fit with how you thought and it’s like hm that’s interesting I would have never guessed that.
