I’m going to St. Martin for my honeymoon in a couple weeks! My wife and I have fresh U.S. passports, and hopefully my being Jewish doesn’t get me deported coming through customs on the way home. Rental car prices in St. Martin are reasonable, but the categories are a little different than the U.S.
We’re staying in an Airbnb (actually booked through TripAdvisor Flipkey because this property was cheaper there than Airbnb) in Grand Case , a little town on the French side of the island, that is supposedly “the gourmet capital of the Caribbean.” Not that we’re going to be inside too much, but it looks pretty ok.
AND IT HAS FREE PARKING.
We’re not going to be doing much driving, but we are thinking of doing a couple things in other parts of the island. It’d be like $60 just for the taxi rides to and from the airport, so with the free parking, might as well rent the Kia Picanto (or similar).
I was tempted to rent a Great Wall Wingle pickup because it has an awesome name and I’m genuinely curious what a Chinese pickup truck is like, but not curious enough to pay almost twice the cost of a Kia Picanto (or similar).
Also, Budget has a picture of a Suzuki Grand Vitara instead of a Daihatsu Terios. I’ve very disappointed with their lack of accuracy.

My friends were there during their honeymoon. They did like the place. They are a Dutch/French couple and they thought that it would fun to visit the only place where Netherlands and France share a border.

You’re hiring a Picanto or similar on an island with a small population? Been there, done that. It actually was a Picanto (previous model). Most basic car in the developed world but otherwise OK.

i would call around, do some googling, and find someone/place to rent you a cheap little suzuki samurai or similar. the islands are made for top off cruising. and who cares if youre going to get it full of sand.

Most of my time will be spent walking out of our apartment down to the beach or one of the many restaurants in walking distance. Aside from the trips to/from the airport, we’re talking like, a trip to a grocery store to stock up on some basic food so we’re not eating every meal in a restaurant, one day going to see this nature preserve, another day going to a beach on the other side of the island, nothing major. But even those rides would easily match the cost of this rental. I just want to pick up the car right at the airport and be on my way.

Actually, you’re right - it’s a Hyundai i10, but it’s mechanically identical and has the same basic body but with restyled front and rear. The later Picanto and i10 are somewhat more differentiated.

I see their rental car size classifications are just as messed up as in the US, perhaps more so. Ours are usually one size off from what the car actually is (EG, a compact will be called a midsize), but calling a city car a compact is two whole classes off.

My return flight connects through San Juan, PR and I believe that’s where I have to clear customs. For some reason I feel like customs in Puerto Rico isn’t going to be the same vibe as the rest of the US.

I figured the Picanto and i10 were siblings, so no reason to pay an extra $40 for the privilege of driving the i10 over the Picanto. We’ll see what I end up with. It’s now only 10 days away!
