As long as said cake is an engine. Most modern Mercedes engines are sealed almost entirely with sealant, rather than gaskets. Posting this because everyone outside of the Mercedes world I’ve talked to thinks this sounds totally hackalicious. It’s actually pretty legit because the sealant and machine work is top notch. The only time I’ve ever seen this setup leak is when someone screws it up. They specify the correct sealant path, bead size (generally 1-2mm), and cleaning procedures. Don’t smear it around, don’t apply too much. Even this small amount mostly squeezes out when torqued together. And yes, this is me, did it yesterday.

it helps that the sealants are much better today than the RTV some companies (like Chrysler) tried to use in the ‘80s. Plus, as you say, it’s easier to use sealant on parts machined flat than things like stamped valve covers and oil pans.

AFAIK all motorcycle engines with split crankcases use sealant on the crankcase joints; Yamabond is Yamaha’s product and is very similar to what Harley-Davidson and Triumph uses.

Totally agree. Mercedes used sealant on the crankcase ventilation chambers of M112/113 valve covers, which are cast, and those have a tendency to leak a little bit after a while (5-10 years usually).

I’ll take your word for it on the motorcycle stuff, but it makes sense for sure.

That is the most delicious looking cake that I don’t want to eat.

I was also surprised when I did a bit of bike stuff in FSAE that Honda gaskets almost nothing. Hondabond ALL the things.

To be fair there are a lot of cakes I wouldn’t eat.

Be careful with that Hondabond stuff, it doesn’t play well with some types of gaskets!

What is this trickery? Engines sealed only with a bead of sealant? I will not abide this voodoo. GIVE ME GASKETS OR GIVE ME DEATH

I’d say that guy is very profficient. I watched a car windshield guy working once and he was laying down the sealant bead just as elegantly, but the bead was about 3/8" in diameter.
