Sounds a lot like they were determining traffic light locations at least partially based on maps rather than with computer vision (which seems like a bad idea). Regardless it sounds like these non-intersection crossings were an issue for whatever they are doing. Wonder how their Arizona test is going (my stereotype of Arizona says it doesn’t have things like pedestrians).

I saw three of the Uber Volvos in Tempe last Friday. Not a lot of pedestrian in AZ, but these three were headed down Mill Avenue which is the main party street for the largest university in the country and has a bunch of weird lit crosswalks and lots of drunk jaywalkers.

SIX? Wow, I was only aware of that one time. So the system needs some work, that’s for sure. But... why aren’t the test pilots overriding it?

“Our self-driving technology required human intervention. The vehicle operator had time to intervene, but failed to take over before crossing the stop line and manually proceeded through the protected crosswalk.”

You had ONE JOB! That’s literally what the test pilot is there for!

Yep, guess their drivers are not very attentive.

That is literally right next to Moscone Center where I work most of the time. It is a weird light and it’s hard to see when it’s busy. With that being said I hate Uber/Lyft with every fiber of my being.

They drive around staring at their phones and then block the road waiting for people.... fucking hate the motherfuckers.

To be fair, you DO have to wait an uncomfortable amount of time to know whether or not the car is going to stop itself. It’s kind of like a game of chicken . But no matter how valuable that will-it-stop information is, allowing the car to proceed to run red lights on public roadways in the name of data collection is unacceptable. These drivers should be setting a threshold after which they engage the brakes manually. Every time they encounter a green light that could be turning red soon, they should be preparing to hit the brakes at the last second, just in case.

Six times sure sounds like a lot, and it is. I wonder how many miles were traveled during that period.

So I was looking through my old posts, and mentioning Mill Avenue here was apparently somewhat prophetic, though I guess it’s likely that accidents will happen most on the busiest streets.

What’s surprising is that the Uber hit that lady down the street from the area I was referencing on a road that normally has no pedestrians.
