My 4.5 I6 is only a 95 mm stroke (3.7). The TDI, interestingly, has a longer stroke at 95.5. Makes sense though, your 4.2 I6 is probably significantly smaller physically than my 4.5 on account of much narrower bores. The longest stroke engine I’ve had would probably be the 4 inch stroke 454.

The Niva has an 80mm stroke, 3.15". Not bad for a 1.7 I think? The Jeeps both have 3.414" strokes, 86.7mm, for a 4.0l. The difference (other than the 4.0 having two extra cylinders) is the Jeep’s 3.875" (98.4mm) bore over the Niva’s 82mm.

Hi Weber buddy, my (reverse of your number) 2.4 is 73mm I think. I also highly recommend the ITG triple carb filter, so easy to put on and off, plus way easier to clean and adding lightness, thing weighs nothing. I started seeing them on cars at Goodwood and I was like, ehhh whaaaat is dis? If it’s good enough for an original GT40 I can give it a go! I love it, barely fits but I can do it.

You might have the most awesome car of anyone I’ve seen on Oppo. I would love to read more about that.

Maybe not concours quality but if that picture is yours it looks pretty dang good to me. Also concours seems to be the only place to see some of those old-world luxury cars. Well done.

What’s it like to drive a straight-8?

It’s a quite interesting car. The ride quality isn’t very good as I have these issues to solve:
-chipped tooth 2nd gear and you have to skip it
-overdrive governor is sticky
-the front suspension has outer upper joints very badly worn out
-ignition is misfiring as distributor shaft wobbles due worn out bearings
-radiator is leaking slightly so heater has to be at maximum temperature

But despite these thing you can still drive with it. The engine has a lot of torque so skipping the 2nd gear is actually possible. It does go quite well at highway speeds, but city driving is very difficult due the gearbox issues. I can get an overhaul kit for the suspension, but finding the correct parts to fix the gearbox is tricky.

It has a single piece cluster gear and and an output shaft that has the mating gear integrated. A NOS part is available for $650, but suitable used one shouldn’t be expensive if I could just find one.

02/28/2017 at 09:09, STARS: 0

I’m assuming it’s a 3-speed so skipping second means skipping straight to top gear haha, that must be interesting.

Honestly in the grand scheme of things most of that doesn’t sound too terribly difficult if you had what you needed. Parts must be a nightmare for a car that old and rare from a long-defunct manufacturer.

It must just have such a special feel to it going down the road, even with all of its faults though.

Packards have been long gone but partswise they are better than many others. Their parts have been well numbered and documented. The parts books also tell in which a certain part will fit. Some are also very well available.

When I imported the car I realized that the brakes were extremely bad. I managed to find a new master cylinder for ~$100 within a week or so. If I just keep my eyes open and follow eBay closely, I should find all necessary parts to revive my gearbox. From here I cannot find anything, as we did get some new Packards in Finland, but no “senior models” that would have the same gearbox.

The gearbox is 3-speed with an overdrive. You could also use the overdrive with 2nd gear as it is operational once speed gets above ~20 mph.
