Since Thanksgiving, I ’ ve spent a total of 11 weeks up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am absolutely in love with it, even the shitty winter is totally worth tolerating because the city is so cool. There ’ s lots of museums and things to do, and its very walkable. Most importantly there are approximately 427,938 bars and breweries to visit, in a town with only 300,000 people. You think I ’ m kidding, but take a trip up there and see for yourself. I seriously think everyone there might be an alcoholic. Which makes it the perfect place for me to visit!

I’ve been working with Irving Shipbuilding Industries on the Harry DeWolf Class Artic Offshore Patrol Ship. AMA about it or Canada and I’ll do my best to answer.

I dunno, Harry DeWolf was a pretty badass dude. He sunk several German ships and also once wrestled a live torpedo right on the deck of the ship.

The real question is: all-dressed, ketchup, or poutine flavoured chips?

(The correct answer is all-dressed)

No, I’ll be god damned if I turn my back on my country over this current crop of bullshit.

That said, I do like it up there and enjoy visiting. The people absolutely live up to their reputation of being incredibly friendly. And its a beautiful country. But Canada also has problems of it’s own, I’ve been around the world enough to know that everyone does, and for as much as people bitch here, we still have it pretty damn good.

I had two big helpings from Smoke’s Poutinery. The first time was good, double smoked chipotle bbq on top of hand cut chips. The second was bacon cheeseburger poutine, decidedly not as good. Since then I’ve avoided it mainly because, as much as I did enjoy it, I could physically feel my arteries hardening as I ate it.

Good to know! I wasn’t actually serious. I, too, love my country too much to leave. Unless I can move to Iceland. That place is da bomb.

I didn’t see all dressed chips, or at least didn’t know to look for them, but I’m going back next week so I will look for them then. I’ve had chicken chips though, and find them quite good.

I just googled, it’s about 100 miles away (155km). In Canada terms I think that’s relatively close. We had a coworker who’s flight got re-routed due to weather and got stuck in St. John’s Newfoundland for 4 days. We discussed staging a rescue mission to go get her until we discovered it’s a 23 hour drive to get there!

The funny thing is, due to the work I’m doing up there, I have a work visa, and had to apply for an SIN (Canada’s equivalent to an SSN). It probably wouldn’t be too difficult for me to become a full citizen since I’m working in an industry in which they don’t have enough qualified people.

Smoke’s is rated 2nd best in Halifax, the place that’s considered the best wasn’t open (due to the holidays or something). Maybe this trip I’ll try to get to the best place, I think it’s open now, and just get some regular poutine.

Also, smokes fries are bland, but the chef was whipping up some hand cut chips, they were amazing!

Been to Toronto? Wonder how it compares. From what I understand, that is more like Canada-lite but I definitely enjoyed it. It was like NYC but without all of the assholes and significantly cleaner. And I was there during an “insane heat wave” of about 85 degrees F so it’s got amazing summer time weather there.

There’s also a long ferry crossing that likely won’t be running either if planes are down.

One time I think I went to Montreal when I was in the Navy. But I was very sdrunk, it’s just as likely I didn’t. So I consider Halifax my first trip to Canada. It’s awesome, it reminds me in some ways of the town I grew up in (Frederick, MD) in so far as there’s a really awesome “core” downtown area with tons of bars and shops and stuff. All the big stuff (Walmart, malls, etc) are all outside the city. It’s great to walk around in, there’s lots of museums and stuff like that. We even want to an axe throwing bar one night, which was awesome. There’s also an amazing craft beer scene up there, and I do love me some beer.

Yeah, it’s a pretty interesting ship design and I think it’s going to serve them well. The parent is the Norwegian Svalbard coast guard vessel.

A belated welcome (and goodbye) from my province (OMG, another Oppo was here at some point? That makes like....4 of us! XD)! Where are you from originally? I’m about 80-100km away from Halifax on the South Shore in Mahone Bay/Lunenburg! :D

Very cool ship! I’ve heard it mentioned before, but don’t know a lot about it. We don’t have much of a military / navy, but I like to think Canada’s equipment is pretty decent enough, considering. Our personnel are also pretty well-trained.

Glad you enjoyed yourself here my friend! Halifax really is a very nice city - I took both my degrees there at Mount St. Vincent University along the Bedford Highway. Very small university, small campus, small student population, but it fit very well with the Halifax vibe. Hope you come back sometime!

Sorry about the weather...winters can be pretty harsh here (...or surprisingly mild! As is common to say around here, ‘If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.’). Enjoy our rash of snowstorms the other week, ha? Did you have any time to travel while you were up here in my area? :)

That’s a clean looking design!

Rough propulsion method?

Diesel-electic, diesel-mechanical, gas turbine-electric? For ice work, I imagine that you want maneuverability and low speed thrust, so probably not jet drive (like LCSs) or even-fancier surface drives. Azipods with nozzles? Is there such a thing as a pump-jet azipod?

Thank you so much! I imagine you already know this, but FromCanadaWithLove is also a Haligonian. I’m from Washington, DC, just up there supporting at the shipyard. It’s my first real trip to Canada(I think I went to Montreal once when I was in the Navy, but I was drunk and don’t remember). Nova Scotia, and Halifax in particular, are really great, lots of things to see and do, and so many amazing bars and restaurants. My liver hates Canada as much as I love it!

The weather did screw us up a little bit. Six of us were supposed to go up on the 12th, only 2 made it. 3 of us got delayed until Tuesday, and one poor woman got stuck in St. John’s (Newfoundland, not New Brunswick) until Thursday. Then we got delayed on the flight out this past Saturday due to fog. Hopefully my next trip up won’t be as bad. I’m coming up on the 5th and will be there until the 24th. So if you’re around and want to meet up and get a beer with a fellow Opponaut, I’m game.

And the NSPS is going to be a good plan, I think. Canadian sailors seem great, but a lot of the equipment you all have is tired. I don’t think they’ve built a new ship since the 80's. But Irving is wraping up FLEX (Frigate Lifecycle EXtension) on the Halifax Class Frigates, which should keep them trucking for another decade or so, at least until the CSC becomes a reality. And the AOPS is going to give you all an interesting mix of capability between a patrol boat and a frigate and it has limited ice breaking capability which makes it perfectly suited to northern operations.

It ’ s diesel electric with a conventional twin screw layout. Ice breaking is a secondary function, they were more concerned with speed and economy, which is why I think they went that route.

I don’t think pump jet azipods exist, though it might be interesting to see one. But there’s a limit to how much hardware you can hang off the back of a ship like that, so my guess is they would be too small to provide the desired speed an efficiency. Also, in an icebreaker, exposed props perform the function of “milling” ice (i.e. chop it up) so a pump jet would be less desirable.

Sheer awesomeness in a bowl. Also, as you observed correctly, a heart attack in a bowl. I have to deliberately avoid it for that reason... but once in a while you gotta indulge...

Right, duh, I think I’ve seen video of “milling”. That would rule out Kort nozzles too (as would the high speed requirement, I think).

You’re welcome. Kort nozzles are fun, I did a project with those and learned a lot. But propulsion isn’t my primary field (though I wish it was, I’ve been lobbying my boss to do more of it since that’s what I was initially hired for). I mainly work on ship auxiliary systems, things like HVAC, hot and chilled water, etc. I also do a little bit of shock work from time to time, which I greatly enjoy.
