When that was originally posted to Oppo last week, my entire critique of the cop was that he failed to stop the rider who was lanesplitting dangerously (albeit legally, because California). But some quasi-aggressive driving by an SUV? DROP THE HAMMER! Either way, he still did the right thing. We need more enforcement like this.

Agreed.

Could that officer have let them in more easily? Yeah.

Should they have not cut him off? Yeah.

Having a turn signal on does not give anyone the immediate right to change lanes.

I’d prefer we derestricted interstate speed limits and made vehicle inspections more stringent. Still have to have cops though, and complaining about them is silly.

I’m against unmarked police cars, but not for reasons related to getting away with speeding. Unmarked cars really only exist as revenue generators without any of the added benefits of having visible marked cars. As I see it, if your issue is people speeding through your neighborhood, an unmarked car doesn’t do anything to discourage that besides randomly freaking out a bunch of drivers when the lights come on, whereas the same car marked, whether stopped at a speed trap or just cruising, is going to make everyone act on their best behavior. Plus, having marked cars shows that there’s an active police presence in a town and is more likely to deter anyone looking to commit a crime of convenience in the area.

ETA: to clarify, I just think that marked cars are a better use of resources with more benefits than unmarked cars.

But on the other hand, some people are more predisposed to do illegal shit when they don’t know there’s a cop around, and therefore its easier for the unmarked cop that is present to witness the crime and make an arrest or serve a citation.

Put a marked car there and the crimes will drop, until that marked unit is gone.

Kinja'd!!! "TheHondaBro" (wwaveform)
02/27/2017 at 10:52, STARS: 7

I politely disagree. People may speed, but once they spot the black/white livery of a police cruiser, they immediately slow down. They don’t slow down because speeding is dangerous, they slow down because they don’t want a ticket. Having an unmarked police car put the fear of God into them is a fantastic way of enforcing the law.

If you don’t break the law in the first place, you have nothing to worry about. If you’re a habitual traffic law violator, you deserve to be pulled over.

I’m all for making vehicle inspections more stringent. Maybe then it could get the shitboxes off the road that can’t or shouldn’t be doing 90... THEN we can increase the limits as needed.

Kinja'd!!! "Ash78, voting early and often" (ash78)
02/27/2017 at 10:53, STARS: 3

Absolutely, but when we take into account the momentum of the two vehicles, the gap closes a bit. I ’ m a big fan of a momentum - based ticketing, system but that ’ s too authoritarian for the US. In other words, ticket speeders based on a vehicle/speed combination to acknowledge actual risk. As it stands, a bike going 20mph over the limit gets the same penalty as a loaded Suburban doing 20 over.

“cops shouldn’t be driving un-marked cars”

Unless they are working undercover, they shouldn’t be using un-marked cars. Using unmarked cars for stuff like traffic enforcement goes against the *spirit* of traffic law enforcement.

And the cop shouldn’t be hitting the gas in a lame attempt to block someone from changing lanes.

So many suburbanites and rural people here who are clearly not familiar with how driving in dense traffic works in reality.

Ditto on the derestricted interstates. Have a posted safe design speed, but no speed limit. That should curtail the left lane squatters that feel they are going fast enough cause they are doing the speed limit. I can almost imagine it, a world where we pass on the left and we keep the left lan clear for passing.

If people knew they could bump up there speed by 5-10 mph to affect a pass, then get back in line and resume their previous speed, I think we’d all be better for it.

We will always have dummies, but that’s where the police could then focus their efforts if they didn’t have to worry about speeders.

Just imagine....

Like others have said, outdated laws are part of the issue. For example - in MA we have leftover 55 MPH speed limits from the seventies, often on roads that have gained 2 additional lanes and longer onramps since then. The result? Everyone does 90 in a 55 and the police don’t care unless you’re the only one going that fast. It’s a nice arrangement but also totally ridiculous.

Kinja'd!!! "Ash78, voting early and often" (ash78)
02/27/2017 at 11:06, STARS: 0

LOL...I know it would be complex, but if we standardize it into something like 5 weight categories, the cop could use the official placard in the car’s door jamb, add the passenger count, and do it pretty simply and objectively. It’d be no more arbitrary than the town-by-town insanity we have now. My worst was “$1 per mph over the limit, plus $185 in court costs.”

Unmarked cars put people on the lookout for Big 3 sedans and SUVs with cheap wheels/hubcaps. It is a terrible way to enforce the law, and impedes traffic flow with false positives.

Every speeder knows what the unmarked in their own jurisdiction look like. They do nothing to reduce violations, they only increase revenues.

If you don’t break the law in the first place, you have nothing to worry about.

Where have I seen this false narrative before...

Police are “to serve and protect,” not “sneak up on and punish.” As much as it is not the most popular opinion all of the time, I think rolling patrols of well-marked vehicles is a more honest way of law enforcement. Is there a need for undercover? Sure and I’m not minimizing the difficult and dangerous work that the police who undertake those duties to bring down felons and the truly evil in this world. Speeding isn’t in that category though and the very presence of severely unmarked cars have on the psyche of the public is probably more damaging to the credibility of the police as servants of the community and instead turns their image toward on that is servants against the community.

I support the police and really like the officers in my town, they do a great job. If they got an unmarked patrol car, I would be very upset with them. I don’t think unmarked, highly militarized police officers are a healthy image to project.

Safety inspections, yes. And maybe a basic sniffer test. But please, god, none of the “gonna check your OBD2 and if there’s even a single insignificant code you fail” bullshit. Like, any early 2000s Buick/Pontiac/Chevy. Great cars, very safe for their time, but the wheelspeed sensor system shits the bed 80% of the time after 90k miles. Is it the wiring? Is it the speed sensors which are integrated into the hub and are stupid expensive to fix? Is it the module? Who knows! Or maybe a bad VVT solenoid, which will make you lose out on that tiny bit of power halfway up the rev range but costs $300 just for the part (not counting an hour’s labor+markup at a shop to have it fixed) but otherwise has no bearing on the car’s roadability. Oops, it threw a code! You fail inspection!

Shit, my Miata which you can attest to be a perfectly fine, road-legal example of the breed, would have failed inspection several times just because the previous owner put the wrong fuckin oil in it and it was throwing VVT errors.

But, yes. Please take all of the rusted-through frame’d GMT400s off the roads and cars that have been t-boned and then “Das good enough” eyeball-aligned by Uncle Clem and driven at 70mph on the highway. And the bald tires. And the tires with OBVIOUSLY broken belts (I can see your Suburban rocking back and forth because your tires is fucked up WHY ARE YOU ON AN ONRAMP?!).

What if the civvie in the white SUV was a mass murder on his way to MassMurderCon and was one trophy short of a full cosplay outfit?

Might have ended up with a little worse than a ticket’s all I’m saying.

That’s the Florida signal, though usually it’s the right indicator for a left turn.

Around my area, there are towns that replace an occupied cruiser with a parked one — you never know whether there’s really a cop in there or not!

I was ticketed close to $300 for having a license place light out and searched for the privilege, a $250 ticket for not coming to a complete stop at an empty intersection in the middle of nowhere, and a careless driving ticket for passing someone who slammed on the brakes in the right lane then decided to change lanes (they tried to change lanes into me, which was somehow aggressive on my part). I’ve had real speeding tickets too, but the getting pulled over and billed for being youngish in a town full of old people is more common.

“Imagining?” No, more like “experienced.” The officer slammed my head on the trunk of my Miata until he could write that I was “unsteady on my feet” in the police report for my ticket. Tick off another concussion.

If you have good cops in your area, good for you! I’m sorry you can’t realize that the rest of the country doesn’t live in a gated community.

I agree as well, I’ve watched cars drive by cops at night with no headlights on whatsoever and not get pulled over recently, as well as all the defects you mentioned. I never said it wasn’t a FLAWED system, or that it wasn’t the majority.

unmarked are ideal for traffic enforcement on interstates. Marked cars cause traffic problems because everyone panics at seeing them with traffic. Unmarked cars can go slowish in the right lane and catch egregious speeders, tailgators, people weaving in traffic and generally driving like dicks!

Cops are being shitty when they target people out of state matching the pace of traffic because they can’t come back and fight the ticket. Cops are also being shitty when they specifically target confusing and outdated signage specifically to meet quotas set by the department.

How many accidents do you see caused by a mechanical failure vs how many do you see caused by negligent or aggressive driving?

I’m betting the stats are around a 1:10 for mechanical failure vs driver error, and even then, a good driver can compensate for most mechanical failures if they know what to do. I’ve driven cars with leaking brake fluid, frozen brake cylinders, sticky throttles, lacking power, transmission problems, broken clutch linkages, loose or worn suspension components, and several other questionable problems (usually only for short distances to where I could work on the car, and yet my only at fault accidents in my 16 years of driving were backing into a light pole and going too fast on ice, both back in high school.

Driver training can compensate for a mechanical failure far easier than a mechanical system can copensate for a bad driver.

Plus, if you get some basic training about the mechanical systems (especially failures), and you’ll have drivers that trust their mechanics a bit more when they can actually understand what they’re saying.

Nothing like taking pride in your job...

In my experience as long as you’re straight and level and admit to being wrong (if you were aware of it in the first place) and don’t get upset that you got caught then you live and learn. I don’t doubt that you’ve had different experiences, but I’m sure there’s details you are leaving out or situations that differ that led to your tickets and view of the law enforcement in your area.

You admit they’re speeding. And not following signage. Correct? If the signs are somehow wrong, take it up with your local highway department. The cops don’t make the signs.

A lot of civil forfeiture happens during a traffic stop. So it’s definitely related. And it’s not propaganda, it’s a serious problem. If you have a problem with people not respecting cops maybe you and your cop buddies just stop acting like you are above the law.

Thought you were posting hypothetically:

“I NEED HELP! I AM BEING MUGGED IN A DARK PARKING LOT!!!!”

That blacked-out SUV with illegal tints is NOT the car I’m running to for help. Maybe it would help if it said POLICE on the side.

Am I whining when an unmarked police car with no lights or sirens on speeds around a blind turn, takes it too wide and goes into my lane, forces me to swerve so I don’t die (Miata + Explorer = me dead), and then turns around and pulls me over for “swerving and speeding away”?

Am I still whining when I talk about the time a group of cops beat the shit out of me off-dash-camera and then intimidated me from pressing any charges or launching any internal investigations?

Okay I’ll give you that last one. I just dismissed it after the first to seemed to imply “What-If?” scenarios. But hey, if you don’t want to go into lengthy details about it I understand.
