Kinja'd!!!

Well, it’s spring! I mean, it was 60F+ over the weekend here in New England and there was a line of rain that came through Saturday night and brought thunderstorms with it. Coupled with warm temps all last week that followed heavy snowfall the previous week, sure enough, the nearby river had some minor flooding issues. Some local roads, fields, and a golf course were underwater, which is no big deal - it happens almost annually with this river. In fact, it happens so regularly that a gas station in the floodplain has markings on the wall from each high water mark over the years, like a parent marking a kid’s growth on the wall. The second highest mark of all time was farily recent, just back in 2011.

The golf course could care less in this case, it won’t open for three months. But this parking lot, for students of a local college, went underwater quickly after the formation of the ice dam early Sunday morning. If there’s one thing college students are NOT good at, it’s responding to, well, anything really, on Sunday mornings. Emergency text messages included, it seems. So... this happened:

It’s a bummer for sure, but this is a parking lot in a floodplain. The river rose all day Friday AND Saturday; it was nice for May (but it’s Feb) at 50-60F and it was forecast to rain, a lot. A quick look at the river’s online level graph should have said it all, on Saturday. However, it would have probably gone back down if not for the ice dam downstream which shot the level straight up. In any case, I know where my car would have been: anywhere but there.

There’s one lifted XJ in the middle of the lot, I suspect it will be fine, haha. Certainly those in the middle will not. They towed as many as they could before the water got too high, but it came up fast once the ice blocked up the river.

This may be a hard lesson for some, but it is most often the case that you alone (and your insurance company!) are responsible for your car when it is parked somewhere.

Happy spring everybody! Global warming mumble grumble....
