EDIT - Took a shitty video with my crappy flip-phone to demonstrate my issue mentioned below. Going to pick up some graphite powder and try that the next time I am in town!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Hi guys....noticed this issue on my ‘09 Accent starting a month or two ago and it’s very slowly gotten worse. It doesn’t affect anything important at all, and isn’t a huge deal at the moment, but I don’t want it to be a sign of things to come...

Now, to the issue - essentially, like most cars, when the door is open and my key is in the ignition (but not set to ACC or RUN), the door chime dings. This is all well in good, except, for the past month or two, mine DOESN’T ding when the key is in the ignition and the door is open. Now, this is intermittent...sometimes it works flawlessly, other times it doesn’t work at all.

When it DOESN’T work, I can often nudge the key one way or another (without turning it) and as long as I hold it there, it will start acting normally again and ding. As I said, ACC, RUN and START all work perfectly normal as before. I don’t really care if the ding stops working, but the ‘dinger’ isn’t the issue - I don’t want this to be a sign the switch could be failing...

Any thoughts?....could it just be dirt in the contacts? Any idea how I could clean it without having to take the the column apart to get to the switch? For the record, this happens with both of my keys. I don’t think it’s an issue of too much weight hanging from the switch - my one keyring is heavy, but that is not usually the one my car keys are on (the keyring I usually use only has the car key and a trinket on it).

Cheers Oppo!

Hmmm...could work. I’ve never worked with the stuff before - what would I do. Just put some on the key and work it in by cycling the switch a few times...?

its what you use to lubricate lock barrels.

just follow the instructions on the bottle and away you go.

is it possible the key is not all the way in? Sometimes there is no dinging if just the tip is in ;)

More importantly, how often do you put the key in and wait for dinging with the door open? Normally, I have everything buttoned down and buckled in before i put the key in...

Locksaver is the lubricant that we use at the shop, i definitely vouch for it, it works miracles, we also use LocShot they both do and excellent job. But if you are looking at thoroughly cleaning, lock saver is it

Hah. I start the car with the driver’s door open every morning and never thought about it until now.

Key is most certainly all the way in as it is the same way I start it every morning since I bought the car in 2013. I usually make a motion where as I slide in, the key goes into the ignition with my right hand as I slide into the seat, with my left hand reaching out to shut the door. It’s not open long to hear te dining but long enough that it’s obvious when it’s working.

Only thing I am worried about is that this is the ignition switch...the graphite lube isn’t going to mess with the electrical contacts, is it? It’s not that the ignition cylinder isn’t smooth or hard to turn in operation, mind, but that the electrical contact for that position on the switch doesn’t seem to be working right. This is my first time using the stuff, so excuse my lack of knowledge / stupid questions / hesitation! :S :)

What year make model is it? The little beeper thing usually isn’t electrical, rather a series of mechanical triggers in it,

It’s a 2009 Accent - issue is 99% the switch and not the chime unit, pretty sure. Added a video up above!
