I was bringing my kids home yesterday afternoon and I was feeling the siren’s call of a nap with the warmth of the car and soothing highway driving. I needed a coffee and so I pulled into the next Dunks behind a dark Passat with gold wheels and some gold writing on it that I couldn’t quite make out, but it looked like they were going for a military theme. I also thought they had the Nazi eagles painted on the side. You know, the eagle with wing spread holding a wreath with a swastika in the middle.
I go through the drive through and dude guy is filling up his car so I can get a good look at it. It is the same eagle but with the VW logo instead of a swastika.
We locked eyes as I drove slowly pass and I gave him my sternest disapproving look. Then my children and I had a lively discussion about what a jack ass he is.

let me make this clear...I’m not nazi lover. what they did was atrocious. but. they did have a sense of style and that eagle is just the right combination of mean, sinister, and elegant.
plus, its based off the german coat of arms...sooo. ehhhhh.

Yeah there’s a I think GTI around here that has one of those stickers on the rear window. Not sure how I feel about it. On the one hand VW kind of came out of the Nazi party, and there’s not actually a swastika on it, but on the other hand, a lot of people will likely recognize the symbolism.

Wow, I haven’t thought about my Tippmann 98 in a long time. It’s in a box somewhere, I should drag it out and oil it up.
I had a lot of stuff added to that thing. Flatline barrel, collapsible stock, double trigger with home made adjustable trigger stop, wrapped in camo tape. The early aughts were very different for me.

I see this type of thing around Cincinnati, too. Nazis and white supremacy types are very real. I saw a Jetta awhile back with SS runes on it. Very scary.
Also the clan is very strong in my hometown. Lots of confederate flags on trucks. Anytime I see one I just assume they are clansmen.
*I’m seeing a lot of Wolf or Wolf pack iconography on locals’ vehicles and tattoos. When the Nazis lost the war one of the secret symbols they switched to from the Swastika was that of the wolf (or the Werewolf). The idea of a pack mentality of predators. And just the other day: the dude at the McDonald’s cash register that had wolf paw prints tattooed on his forearm.

Seriously dude, this isn’t just a thing that exists in the fringes of Germany. Nazis and Neo-Nazis have existed in the US since Nazis began. There were even Nazi party sympathizes here during WWII. They were the American Nazi Party. They’re still around, too. How do you not know this?

I should have clarified where I’m from. I hail from south east Ohio, right here on the fringes of both; Appalachia and, Ohio farmlands. I’m a country boy through and through and a lot of this kind of stuff is pretty foreign to me, as we just don’t have that kind of population mix. I know Nazis exist over here. I haven’t been living under a rock, however when the nearest big city (Columbus) is a 2 hour drive away. There is a very real trickle down effect. For the most part my area is quite insulated. Just in recent memory have the drugs here started to shift from prescription drugs to Meth to Heroin. So while I know that Nazis exist I’m not familiar with their practices, codes, and such.

It’s difficult to understand if you’re a rational, level headed person.
But racism and hatred that resides in the Nazis or Clansmen is TAUGHT. And it revolves around fear, ignorance, power, control, and perceived threats.
They are a GROUP. And, like in my hometown, this group is disadvantaged, segregated, unexposed, and ignorant.
And this group projects its problems onto another group.
