Two blacktops together

First time I was able to take a picture of my blacktop avenger next to an identical blacktop avenger. Mine is the closer (cleaner) one. He/She even has the same black steelies for the winter, and the only difference I could find was the other blacktop had a darker tint on the windows.

Took me nearly 15 months of ownership to get two side-by-side. I have seen another couple blacktops in the same colour, but they were pulling out of parking lots.

I have yet to find another Space Grey E90 M3 to park next to.

But does it have a six-speed transmission or a four? The world needs to know.

(Roughly five people will understand this argument)

Tbh, probably a 4 speed but the gearing would be wacky. Online it states they come with 6 speeds. But, under fair acceleration (normal traffic), my first gear goes to 2nd at 22 kph, to 3rd at 45 kph, and to 4th at 67 kph. So the final gear extends from 67 kph to it’s approximate 200 kph top speed?

If I had an answer for you, I’d give one, but I don’t, so I can’t.

It just seems odd in a 4 speed for, under normal acceleration like 1/3 to 1/2 throttle, my final gear goes from 67 kph to 200 kph. That’s a wacky gear ratio. Problem is it’s hard to tell gear shifts at higher speeds in a new automatic. The outside noise and the smooth gear shifts make it hard.

Thanks. Tbh, I mostly bought it for the classical styling Dodge still gives. I am a bit partial to domestic vehicles (my other car is a Buick, my next is a Pontiac). It’s simplistic but slightly-sporty (I’ve actually had someone asked if it was supercharged, despite just a NA 2.4L 4 cyl). ‘Top Speed’ calls the new look “sinister”. The lights don’t go half way up the hood like on foreign cars. There’s no crazy swoops or cuts or odd shapes. It’s a very straight forward car, always a stress-free drive. Super easy to drive and understand- a 12 year old can drive it.

Doesn’t seem too strange to me. My 3's AT hits final gear at ~60kph, Miata’s 5-speed MT can be shifted into 5th at, like, 50kph safely. (That said, going 130kph it’s at like 4100rpm cruising!)

What’s the “blacktop” distinguisher coming from?

Clearly the whole car is painted black, but what about the “top” part? I know different color roofs are getting a lot more common nowadays, but don’t all Avengers have body-color roofs?

Seconding Jarrett here...

Unless I’m missing some inside thing, I think it’s probably not abnormal. I’m guessing 200 kph is the car’s top speed? That wouldn’t mean that its final gear would take it from cruising 67 to 200 - under virtually any condition, it’d downshift (minimally one gear, depending on throttle) to notably accelerate. You could accelerate in top gear (more easily with a manual), but it’d suck. Top gear on I think like all new-ish cars are generally overdrive gears used for highway cruising, not accelerating. You could watch the tachometer for RPM drops to count gearshifts, but depending on the gearing, there may even be minimal drops from 4th to 5th and especially 5th to 6th.

Towards the end of the Avenger production (2013), Dodge came out with a special package for the Avenger called the “Blacktop package”. It’s a package you can get for your avenger to make it appear more sinister, more attractive. It includes blacked out lights all around, black 18" aluminum rims, black interior, black spoiler, and some other things. They came in 4 colours (maybe 5?) Black, white, silver, and red. They are less common than typical avengers, but in my city of 190,000 people, I can estimate there are just less than 20 blacktops. I’ve seen about 7 or 8 different ones so far, including this black one.

Yea, Idk. I’m estimating 200 kph is top speed. I’ve only got as fast as 160 kph simply because of traffic reasons (the cars ahead are only doing 105 or 110 kph) but it was still pulling at 160. It could be the standard 4 speed. I don’t really care as long as it works and lasts me until around 172k km (has 95k km now) in which point I plan on selling it and buying something nicer, like a Cadillac.
