Last year we all heard of the many celebrity deaths. Here is the news of a common man who was loved by many in the racing sector. Sadly he passed away in a snowmobile accident in December. He was one of the most revered tire engineers in the industry. At 2 p.m. today at the 59th annual Daytona 500 there will be Goodyear decals on the cars with the name Ryan Copeland along with “1974-2016".

If you search the web for him you might find the crew chief for Kasey Kahne saying Copeland was the best or that Tony Stewart gave $5000 to the GoFundMe page for his family. He was a regular guy respected in our city and I just needed to call your attention to him. He left behind a wife and 3 kids. He was every man, a good husband and great guy. He was into hot rodding when younger and turned his talents into being a top notch engineer. I’ve had family and friends working in and around the tire industry which still has its roots here in Akron and I’m certain many knew him. I didn’t know “Copey” myself but when he died I heard by word of mouth of other local guys who did which made me regret I’d never met him. RIP.

Many friends with Goodyear and Bridgestone still. Cousins spouse just left Bridgestone(Firestone) after about 30 years. My wife’s grandfather worked for Firestone, Seiberling, BFG, General and Mohawk. Its been an honor to have met several women who were riveters building Corsair planes at Goodyear during WWII. I wasn’t born here but had a connection before even being born. My father built blimp hangers before and after WWII for the Navy.

I’ve thought about making a photo collection of existing companies and old buildings from a bygone era.
