Kinja'd!!!

Im planning on buying a rust free 3rd Gen 4Runner with some of the cash I received from the VW TDI settlement. I found a few in the non-rust belt parts of America, and will be road tripping one back to New York. I need tips on how to prevent rust on the chassis and body.

I looked into adding an undercoat treatment by Ziebart, but have been warned to stay away from such practices by some mechanics because it can make a mess for future repairs and modifications. I had the unlimited carwash subscription from Hoffmans Carwash through their drive through car wash, but I didn’t like how the mechanical arms added swirl marks to the clear coat on my Jetta SW. I guess everything is a compromise, just wondering if anybody out there has some brilliant idea I’ve never hear of.

If that’s the underside of it, I would just stay ahead of the rust with periodic inspection.

Using POR15 or a similar product over the existing finish would not work too well.

Don’t drive it in winter or wash it immediately if you do. I live firmly in the rust belt and that’s about all you can do. It will eventually start to rust though...

Find a local rustproofing company like Carwell, or Rustkote and spend the 100 or so dollars on an application every fall.

It’s what I do at least and I’ve been happy with the results.

From someone who lived (and will soon be back in) Ontario, here’s what works best.

-High quality undercoating, make sure the surface is clean then spray it wherever you can.

-Unlimited monthly wash pass with the under car pressure wash. Use it nearly every day.

-Good all season floor mats to prevent salt building up on the carpet.

-Knock your boots together before you get in.

-Don’t store it in a garage as that can accelerate the corrosion.

-If you find a couple bubbles in the spring, sand the area to bare metal and repaint.

There are some sprays and such. Some people use gear/motor oil spray for the chassis. Im not winning right now

WaxOyl. Or a similar “never dries” treatment applied every year or every other year.

Definitely Zeibart. Basically dip the car in as much oil as you can.
