Kinja'd!!!

Welcome to a new series, Craigslist Debunking. We will be dissecting peoples’ less than factual Craigslist listings that are chock full of bullshit. Tonight, we investigate this Vintage bicycle racing track gas bike scooter Gulf edition 80cc.

The craigslist article (with annotations)

2016 RECREATION CUSTOM DESIGNED GT GULF RACER WITH ALL THE BEST PERFORMANCE PARTS AND STREET LEGAL IN MOST STATES,”NO TAGS OR INSURANCE”!!

*MR. CRANK RACING CDI (wut?)

*2 RACING COILS

*BUILT AND BALANCED FULL RACE REED ENGINE ($950.00) (ok but why on a hilariously overpriced Schwinn bike and why does one need a 9.5 hp racing engine on a bicycle)

*TWIN SPARK PLUG HEAD

*CUSTOM TUNED EXHAUST

*CUSTOM BILLET PARTS

*BILLET SPROCKET AND ADAPTER

*CUSTOM SEAT

*SPRINGER FORKS (Hell. NO. I have no trust in these whatsoever. And I ride a mountain bike with a carbon fiber fork)

*CUSTOM BALANCED WHEELS (every wheel is custom balanced by a machine or human. I could balance these wheels and I can call it custom. And it’s called “wheel truing” btw)

*HIGH SPEED VINTAGE STYLE TIRES (I wouldn’t trust these tires for what you’re doing with this bike, seriously)

*$800.00 CUSTOM BASE COAT AND CLEAR PAINT WORK (but why)

*FULL ALUMINUM GT FRAME (this “GT” frame looks to be on the end of “shit” like the GT mountain bikes they sold with fucked up disk brake mounts. Sure, Dorel could have made it, but it’s still shit.)

* VINTAGE SPEEDOMETER AND HEADLAMP (Why not throw in a garmin with this at this price range?

TO MUCH TO LIST! BUILT FOR NOT ONLY FOR SHOW BUT FOR SPEED,,,,45-50 M.P.H. (death)

DO TO THE NATURE OF THE SPEED OF THIS CYCLE WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR HOW IT IS RIDDEN! CYCLE DOES NOT HAVE NOR DOES IT NEED TITLE. (Calling Lehto please)

This bike will add to your collection something that nobody have! (Your collection will soon go toward an auction after the coaster brake fails)

My thoughts

This bike highly disturbs me as a cyclist (and bike mechanic) that it has NO brakes. Does not seem to have brake mounts on the 30 dollar fork. This is a good bike to ride off a cliff. It seems to be a one way street to death.

And it’s a Schwinn. It has a threaded stem (which I really wouldn’t trust in this instance) and some sort of seat attachment system I’ve never seen. It seems to be photoshop, by this seems to be reality defying.

This bike also seems to have a “reaction arm” along with a “backpedal” coaster brake. This cheap band of metal will totally endure 9 hp. I’m sure you’ll have a way to brake once they fail.

This needs some huge downhill-spec hydraulic brakes so they won’t fail from the heat. This also needs a better fork, not some thing made of 30 dollars of cheap steel.

TIL: There are some assholes who put gas engines in overpriced Schwinn bikes without any sort of logical braking system and then sell them for 3000 dollars.

This is a properly made bike for this engine.

For a basic bike they make basic engines. Why go through the trouble for something not purpose built?

I’m not going to comment on the engine or brakes but I desperately want a gulf-liveried bike now.

Reminds me of the Choppers made in the early 2000s during that craze.

Found the listing, not surprised it’s Ohio.

*MR. CRANK RACING CDI (wut?)

Probably means it has a capacitive discharge ignition setup, triggered by a magnetic reluctance sensor on the crank. And, racing, because omg racing parts.

Not a lawyer, but... well, it would need a VIN to be issued as a self-assembled motorcycle, and then a title for that VIN to be issued to be registered for use on the street... but I think if it’s exclusively used off road, it might actually be legal?

At that point why not just jump off the cliff yourself

Whops, forget to post the link. I think it needs a motorcycle license for most states....

Well, it’s simply not legal to operate on the road, license or not. The builder (who motorized it) would need to go through the self-assembled vehicle process to get a VIN, and would fail out due to missing equipment. Add the equipment, then they could get a VIN and a title, and then register it as a motorcycle.

Off-road, OTOH, no license necessary.

Due to speed it definitely would. Most are limited to 30-35 I believe. It would also require a vin like the other person said. It’s far past the motor assisted portion of the law.

My 80cc moped has actual brakes, and tires and technically will go 45 mph, but it’s not something you really want to do. I can’t imagine how scary that would be on a bicycle with pedal brakes.

Even motor-assisted bicycle requires type-approval here in Ohio, through providing a manufacturer’s certification that it meets that class’s requirements to the Department of Public Safety.

I’m unsure about Indiana’s laws on it honestly. I’ve never thought about buying one enough to spend time looking.

Here’s Indiana’s laws it seems:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Summary:

MDC-A: 5 bhp or less, requires Motorcycle endorsement (optionally with MDC-A restriction) or Motorcycle learner’s permit, insurance required, passengers allowed

MDC-B: 50 cc or less, 35 mph or less, requires MDC-B endorsement (possible to get at 15 years old or even with a suspended license, it seems) or any valid driving credential (including motorcycle/MDC-A license), insurance not required, no passengers
