Kinja'd!!!

Savagely worn teeth. New gears required. I haven’t looked I to it at all yet but I have no idea what I need to get. It’s a specialized rockhopper comp 29er 28 speed 2011 I think but not sure on the year

You should probably see a dentist if the bike has teeth like that.

Nah, just grind off the teeth on the big ring. I seriously may do that, I never use it. The only thing a big ring has done for me on a mountain bike was a big scar on my leg from a gash caused by those teeth.

It’s Shimano so replacement chain rings are readily available online. If the teeth are as badly distorted as you say then be prepared to replace the chain and the rear cassette as well. That’s why a yearly chain replacement is money well spent...

The good news is there are many cranks that will fit that bike. Just go to your local bike shop and get one. I have an old Nishiki I’ve put 3 cranks on. Oh replace your chain at the same time if the crank looks like that the chain is toast.

Switch to a single ring up front. You never need all those gears anyway, less weight (drop the shifter, too), and less maintenance and complexity. Simplify and add lightness.

Just replaced the chain as it snapped last weekend. The rears still have decent square edges to them.

damn - what was the previous owner doing, cutting stone with that thing? (I put 10,000 mi on a fairly cheap Suntour set on my old 930 and they didn’t look that bad.)

Replace your rings, cassette, and chain. And replace your chain every 4-8 months thereafter depending on mileage and conditions. It keeps an expensive crankset and cassette happy. And as you’re up in the great white north like me, regular judicious application of a wet lube. I’m partial to Raceline ceramic.

See if he’ll do your bike at the same time.

Also, best of luck. I woke up during the surgery.

Is it properly tightened? I’m not a bike mechanic but I maintain my own bikes and have for a long time. I could definitely be wrong but I’d be a bit surprised if that was happening bc of that chain ring. Just wouldn’t want you to go through all that trouble if that’s not the problem.

Nah I’m pretty sure it is the rings. They are original and definately have taken a beating.

Make sure you’re seeing an oral surgeon if they are taking out the lower left (#17). I’m not a bike mechanic, but I am an expert on this. Don’t let a general dentist near that.

I’ve been happy with Salsa chainrings, but I don’t know if they are still making them. The one I have on my Trek has held up just fine for years now, though I only ride it 15 miles a week or so.

New chainrings, new chain, new cassette. All three are required.

The chain rings are easy to replace with some Allen wrenches once you get the crank pulled. You need special tools to pull the crank off. You also need a special tool to remove the cassette. All are available from Nashbar.

You can probably get an entirely new crank assembly with new rings for about the same price as the three rings. HOWEVER I have an 8 year old 9-speed XT group and am still on the original front rings and have been through 3 cassettes and 5 or 6 chains. I would start by cleaning everything really well and making sure your chain is the right length (it could be cut too long) and finally make sure the Front derailure is adjusted properly.

If you replace the chain, you most likely will need to do the chainrings if you want the chain to bite. there are different wear patterns from the old chain to the new chain.

You should probably replace the chainring, cassette, and chain. It looks like the teeth on your chainring are so worn that you’ll immediately start stretching the chain and damaging the cassette. Per your other comment, you’ve got 6 years of use on it. Time to upgrade. I’ll use an appeal to experience argument here; I ride roughly 7500 road miles and 1000 mtb/cx miles per year.

if its just the outer ring from bent/worn teeth then you should be able to get just the outer ring replaced...

that said, I’d check you derailleur alignment and stops first. its a new chain? check to see if it isnt stretched (off chance you might have a dude)

EDIT: also, double check to make sure its the RIGHT chain...
