New $18 alternator installed and the smog pump removed. Car no longer sounds like the shrieking of the devil’s demons.
All this garbage was broken and all kinds of stupid. Know how many bolts it takes to remove the alternator on this car? Three. Know how many different sockets I had to use? Three. 15, 16, and 17 mm. What the fuck, Ford?
That smog pump was horrid though. Barely spun by hand at all.
Different belt to accommodate the lack of a smog pump. Had to do some fiddling with the tensioner since it was a tad too small.
I hate O’reillys.

My freebie WindScar drove me crazy - half the fasteners in metric and half in standard. It was made in Windsor ON so it should have been all metric; hell, if it was made in Dearborn it should have been all metric. C’mon Ford, make up your collective mind - one type of fastener or the other. Working on German cars for years I kept metric tools in my main toolbox, and had to dig out the secondary box for the standard stuff.
Years ago I replaced the alternator on the 320i when the bearing noise became too much to handle. Bought a rebuilt from my usual parts place and then had charging issues that I didn’t have with the one with the bad bearings. Third time was the charm, but that should have been unnecessary.

It’s in terrible shape, has 1/4" of paint, and a 3.8 V6 that’s moments from death. Also, full of broken glass.
