I woke up late, worked out on my treadmill, and went to the office (VESPA!!) to work on billing and odds and ends. January and February are always my worst months, because we have a lot of marketing events.
One if my bigger worries is paying my associates more money. They are both wonderful, but sooner or later bigger firms will come knocking. I can’t compete with thise dollars, so I try to provide a better quality of life. I also invest in their careers. I got one on the Board for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and he may end up the next chair. I could not be prouder. The other is a workhorse ready to seize opportunity when she returns.
Most attorneys try to keep associates dependent on the firm. I want to be different, and want them to build their own practices to create their own security like I did. My hope is that by supporting their career growth, they decide to stay. We will see if I am right or wrong.
I left 3 firms, not for money, but to be able to pursue opportunity to do what I want to do. My theory is that you build loyalty by taking the cuffs off and enabling the drive of ambitious people.
Time will tell. If I am right, they stay because there is no reason to leave. If I am wrong, I lose them and their clients and have to rely on my own, but that is all I ever had in the first place.
This January was particularly bad because one of my attorneys had a baby. I am not complaining - she is an awesome employee and I am happy for her. But it has an impact.
I am having lunch at one of my regular local spots. Then I am going home to clean my pool. This wet winter has left it nasty - having my trees trimmed did not help because a bunch of crap fell in the pool.

One of my biggest fears about starting my own company is being able to keep good people. Also insurance. And regulators. A good friend of ours at a small company (30 people) that makes a specialty product just had a workplace accident where a young guy got hurt pretty bad. They are going above and beyond doing everything they can to make it right, but family of the injured guy is threatening to sue them for more than they have anyway. In the meantime OSHA has the place shut down for who knows how long, and their insurance rates are going to go through the roof when they reopen. Of course that’s assuming they don’t lose all their contracts in the interim.
Me, I’m just hiding in the workshop hoping the wife and kids don’t find me. Also yard work.

I got dealt the late shift today at work so I’m sitting in my cube “supervising” all the analyst who are allowed to work from home because it’s Saturday. Benefit is I got to have a lovely long breakfast with my wife and I’ve been able to listen to music at a reasonable level all day while I work...on grad school essays

Replaced clogged oil pick up tube and o-rings inside oil pan on my $350 Volvo V70. Also cleaned PCV channels. Now it got good oil pressure and no longer smokes.
