Kinja'd!!!

I had an obnoxious friend trying to impress a girl one time tell me he’d kick all our asses in his mom’s 700HP AWD Sorento. Yep. Twin supercharged. Mmm Hmm. He could have at least told us it was a Borego as that one had the V8. Not that it mattered since there was no way he was going to put his money where his mouth was. That’s my story, what’s yours?

Maybe not dumb, just ignorant. Back in 1985 I was in line to register for classes when I heard some people discussing the RX-7 and what engine was in it. As someone that had built that cool see-through model rotary engine years earlier I obviously knew, but one these guys was insisting it had a V6 in it, the others saying I4, and of course nobody suggest a rotary. Well, two rotors and three chambers per rotor does sorta equal 6 combustion chambers, but no, the RX-7 never had a V6 from the factory; Mazda didn’t even made a V6 engine back them, with their first, the JF, introduced in 1986 (and probably not in the US until years later).

“Never.”

-In response to me asking the last time a girl had had her tires rotated or EVER removed from her vehicle after I’d stopped to help her change a flat tire (the lugs were fucking frozen).

The car was about five years old and still on stock tires, which were balding, hence the blowout on the freeway in the middle of nowhere. At night.

Followed a short time later by:

“No. What’s a parking brake?”

After she got back in her car, then quickly got back out and called me back over to say that her car wouldn’t move. I said it was because I had engaged the parking brake. So I walked back over, reached in, and disengaged it for her, at which point her car lurched forward because it was still in Drive.

She’d tried to move it and when it didn’t budge, she stepped back out without putting the damned thing in park first. I jumped in, slammed on the brakes and put it in park for her then explained how to fucking make sure her fucking car isn’t about to run someone over on its own.

About that time I was driving away in my car with a nonexistent motor.

There was a stoner at a bus stop who was trying to convince me his “Hee-oon-dah-ee” was an ex-government vehicle that had special lights on it that he could turn on and park anywhere without getting a ticket. Apparently “normal lame-person cars like yours” don’t come with the option of, er... four-ways. This was after he taught me the difference between tap water from the sink in the kitchen and in the bathroom (they put chlorine so it washes your hands in the bathroom but not the kitchen so you can drink it) and a few other things I couldn’t be bothered remembering.

I wished him luck in evading tickets, and decided I could just walk home.

Well, my point being that, past a certain age (18 in most states), you aren’t required to take a class, only pass a written exam and a driving exam that show that you understand the laws of the road and the operation of the vehicle.

If this person is a late-learner (and there are a surprising many in the US), they never took the driver education course that would have also instructed them in the basic care and maintenance of a vehicle. Those sorts of things are not on the written exam at all, at least not in the two states where I’ve seen people apply for a brand new licence.

What’s-the-minimum-I-need-to-do-to-get-what-I-want is kind of default human nature, truth be told.

You might luck out. Someone sideswiped my Fiesta while parked, $2k in damage. Their insurance paid for it. I checked Carfax a few months later, and it showed no accident history. Six months after that, it was rear-ended and totaled on the highway. My insurance wrote it off and issued me a check. Now, a year after that, Carfax still shows a clean title. *shrug*

Yeah I have a few friends waiting till 18 because they are too lazy and are afraid of failing. I try to tell them why that’s a bad idea, how it can be more dangerous and that the test is surprisingly easy, I’m no bad driver, but I’m not the best either and the only comments I got were “lefts were too sharp” I just wish that the mentality you mentioned wasn’t applied to things that can contain a ton of responsibility such as driving.

As much as it bothers me, all I can do is lead by example and hope people follow.
