Kinja'd!!!

OK, I owe the IRS some money. And I didn’t have medical insurance for the first 5 months of the year since I didn’t have an income. I filed my taxes in January and received my state refund in a couple of days (which was sent right back to them as personal property tax...), but haven’t received any word about my Federal return. They’ll probably take my refund, and I’m perfectly OK with that, I just want them to say something, anything...

Being old, I had to look up what ‘bae’ meant. To me, it means this:

I’m familiar with it, but to me it still means this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Aerospace

Wait... You said you owe taxes but they will probably take your tax return. That doesn’t make any sense. If you owe them money you had better pay it or call to set up a payment plan. After April 15 they will send you a bill with mad late fees and penalties. You had better figure it out soon.

I checked my mailbox this afternoon and found a letter from the IRS, and for some reason they’re asking me to call and confirm my identity. Whatever - I was just happy to hear from them, as odd as that may sound when one receives a letter from the IRS.

I did speak to them last year regarding what I owed and made arrangements, but was laid off shortly thereafter and couldn’t pay on time; a roof over my head and food on the table were slightly higher priorities. Yes, I expect late fees and penalties due to that situation, but the amount I owe with the fees and such should come out to almost the same as what I was expecting as a refund.

Years ago they just took my refunds to cover student loans that I hadn’t been paying (I accepted this as a simple way to handle the situation without having to think about it or write big checks, even though I knew it wasn’t the most responsible way to handle it), and would like it if they would just confiscate my refund instead of them sending it to me and me having to turn around and sending the same money right back to them. Take it and send me the difference or a bill for the remaining amount I owe and I’ll pay it because it won’t be all that much and life is much better these days.

Me too, coming from an aviation background, but I wanted to keep my reply to an automotive theme. What really surprised me was that BAE Turbo Systems is still in business after 40+ years. Also surprising was the fact that the BAE stands for Bob’s Automotive Engineering...

That is not how to handle this at all. If they start garnishing your wages you are going to be up shit creak. Please go talk to a financial advisor. Money management is an extremely important part of being an adult and the sooner you get on top of things the sooner your life can turn around. If you keep going like this you will only let the situation persist until you die. Not a life anyone wants to live. Please, please, please get help asap.

The student loan thing was taken care of ages ago. This is just a few hundred owed to the IRS, with the refund due that is almost exactly what I owe. I’ll give them a call on Monday, verify my identity, and find out the difference between refund and funds owed. One quick call and perhaps a tiny check and this will all be over.

Oh thank god. You had me worried it was really bad. I owed $4500 one year and had to pay it off in installments. $400/month in penalties and interest. Some people I work with owe tens of thousands of dollars to the IRS, rent, have no retirement saved, and are in their late 50's. They let a small problem balloon out of control because they didn’t know how to get help and I feel so bad for them.
