I sort of get Miatas now.

I borrowed my mom’s Miata for a week, ostensibly to wash it and wax it and change the oil, but in actuality because it’s 70º out and my Jag’s suspension is a mess and my Town Car has an A/C leak.

I was going around an exit ramp with a posted limit of 25 doing about 50–60 when for reasons I can only assume have to do with being very stupid, I downshifted without thinking.

My thought process went like this “oh shit, oh shit, wait... wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”

Also, Tiny Dancer was blasting on the radio while I did it, because driving a tiny feminine red sports car means you don’t have to feel any shame.

The fact that I am, in theory, a mature adult, just makes me certain that no one should ever, ever have children, because they will never stop being awful.

Bonus photo of my little dog in the car, because no shame . (My Rottweiler would not fit, even just for an ironic photo. My little dog was not in the car when I accidentally drifted it.)

ONE OF US! ONE OF US! AUTOCROSS BRO! HOOISERS BRO! TRACK DAY BRO! SPEC MIATA CONVERSION BRO!

Anyway, my Miata does give me smiles when I find corners for it to carve or nice temperatures to drive around without the hardtop.

Precisely. Imagine treating every corner like that whenever possible, seeking out that specific feeling on every trip to the grocery store, in a typically inexpensive and fairly reliable car, every day, all the time.

I know we have our share of Miataphiles (*raises hand*) and Miatahaters here, but I always feel that many of the haters, they’d probably hate less and be more like, “Okay, I get it...still not for me, but I get it,” if they just took one for a spirited drive with some corners. Personally, I’m not about converting anyone, but I always smile when someone who didn’t think much of the Miata before can come to the understanding of its appeal.

(At the same time, I understand that broad appeal and a rabid fanbase just kind of generates hate by being a little obnoxious. I say this not as a Miata fanatic, but as lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan who tends either be treated as either family or vermin by complete strangers based off of one relatively unimportant piece of information about me.)

I sort of got it before, just because it’s grippy and buzzy and basically a reliable MG with airbags, but it wasn’t until I experienced how bizarrely well-mannered it could be with the rear end loose that I actually got it got it. Now I want one that I can do bad, bad things to.

They’re a blast. Too bad the interior is so small.

I kind of like that, actually. If you don’t count the back seats, it basically has as much space as my XJ8, right down to the useless change pocket below the steering wheel.

Deep down, we all want to believe we we’re Keiichi Tsuchiya or Colin MacRae but we know we aren’t. Having a car that rewards bravery rather than punishing it allows the everyman to feel like an automotive superhero even when we know we’d probably never even survive a LeMons race, let alone a hillclimb or a rallycross. ^_^

I like small cars with small interiors. My first car was a Fiero, which fit me like a glove and I loved it.

But I don’t like not being able to fit into a car comfortably. I’m not even that much bigger than average (6' 1", 210 lbs), but there just isn’t enough leg room in a Miata and the windshield frame is constantly in my field of vision.

That’s a fair point. I’m 5'8", so cars like the Miata were basically built for me

As a fellow Cowboys fan I understand. I moved to California from Texas a few years ago and the reaction when they found out I’m from Dallas is 50/50. Either they like me twelve times more than they did before or they pull out a set of shoulder pads with spikes on them and start talking about Al Davis and the glory days.
