Kinja'd!!!

Lucy is a survivor. When we adopted her, the shelter employee thanked me, and confessed that they had been hiding her by moving her to different cages because she had passed her deadline to be adopted and death awaited.

She had been horribly abused and was terrified of everyone. My son, 5 years old at the time, fell in love at first sight and insisted we adopt her.

Since then, she has had two near death experiences, and survived both. During a serious illness I took her for a follow up, and the vet told me she did not expect to see Lucy alive after the previous visit. But she is still here.

She never really recovered from the abuse, and even after 11 years with us she is afraid of everything. But she is a good dog and we love her.

More people need to get their dogs from shelters and rescues than from breeders. They’re the most loyal dogs out there and you’re doing a good deed.

Shelters and rescues are great (my dog was a rescue), but in most cases you are taking on dogs that have been abused, neglected, or have health or behavioral issues (well cared for dogs generally don’t end up in shelters/rescues). I can understand people who don’t want to deal with that. But I would hope if you are going to buy a puppy rather than adopt, you’d buy from a reputable breeder rather than a puppy mill or pet store.
