I recently spent about 8 hours replacing sway bar bushings.

Turns out all I needed was a bigger pry bar.

So true.

In theory, all you gotta do is remove two bolts or whatever. BUT NO you gotta fetch the jackstands and put the car in the air and put on some warmer clothes because the ground is colder than anticipated... Then you set up a work light to see by, and you gotta find the right size socket and then the bolts are so rusted that you soak ’em in oil while looking for a pipe to make a cheater bar... Then you get the fasteners out but the part is hanging up on something because rust, so you tap it off with a hammer, from an awkward angle because you don’t have a hoist to stand up under the vehicle, you’re just lying on your back... Then you fit the new part up in place and try to fish the bolts through the holes, but the piece is heavy, so it takes a minute to jiggle the holes into alignment... And now the fasteners don’t want to thread in, and you don’t know if it’s a bad angle, a randomly marred thread, or just rust, so you break out the thread chasers and/or wire brush to clean it all up... Then you finally get it tightened and torqued and you can put the vehicle back on the ground again, and now it’s time to clean up all the tools you got out and put them away... And now it’s time for a test drive, but you gotta go wash up so you don’t get the interior dirty... So you get on the road and the hood starts to wiggle a little because you forgot to latch it all the way, so you pull over and watch for traffic while you get out and shut it... And hopefully the repair was successful so you don’t have to get all dirty again.

(This rant was supposed to take one minute to write, but took eight. Go figure.)

I was about to say the same thing! I swapped wheels in my garage in less than thirty minutes on Wednesday. When I was done I felt like something was terribly wrong because nothing went terribly wrong.
Last time I had one of the fancy “chrome” caps round off and I spent 2+ hours working to get it off then peeling the chrome cover off and so on.

This happened to me once or twice when I changed driveshafts on the van.

The outer CV joint is inside the swingarm, so I have to get that wheel off the ground so I can access each of the six bolts. I also need a 6" extension to get into there.

Then one breaks off.

I try to drill/EZ out the bolt in place, and the EZ out breaks.

I try to drill the EZ out out, end up with a broken drill bit.

Fuckit, hub comes off and I wrestle with it on the bench

Next time I’m skipping #1 and #2.

Yea. Haha. I got the radiator out of my Corvette in an hour and a half. When I was done I was kind of not sure what to do lol. I for sure was expecting to snap a bolt or fight something I wasnt expecting to be in the way.

Wait, no broken tools in that scenario? I thought you said rust was involved? What are you too good for harbor freight? Hahahahahaha

Oh yeah! Gotta have a bad bulb in the work light, or something like that. Maybe a couple of quick runs to the parts store, too, to get a loaner puller or to swap out a wrong part. (And a stop by the hardware store for a new bolt...) Don’t forget the ten minutes spent crying over the sink trying to get the flake of rust out of your eye because “eh, who needs glasses, I’ll be careful”.

After too many flakes in the eyes, I legit wear safety glasses (or sunglasses depending on inside or outaide the garage haha) when under cars now. Theyre annoying but I don’t have to keep running in the house anymore.

And for me there’s ALWAYS at least another trip to the store, i build it into the timeline now.
