Hot take: I don't care about auto racing. At all. Not a bit. Zero.

Every weekend I hold out a bit of hope that the front page will have a few decent articles between the endless race coverage. And every weekend I find oppo is my only refuge.

I’d rather watch golf with the volume muted while listening to a political talk show radio than endure Nascar, F1, Indycar, or whatever else there is (slight hyperbole...).

I’ve seen people say that in order to be relevant to enthusiasts Nissan, Toyota, VW or whichever automakers have “lost their way” needs to enter a car in “such and such” series. No. Incorrect. Stop this nonsense. Putting a GT-R so heavily modified and chopped up it’s a completely different vehicle in the “5 years of Sebring at Spa 5000 Dale Earnhardt Jr. Competizione Master cup” does not make me think your company cares about enthusiasts. Making fun cars, at multiple price points with some decent support behind the product does that.

Now excuse me while I hop on Macworld to tell everyone how inferior their OS is to Android.

Here’s another hot take:

I don’t care if a manufacturer doesn’t make enthusiast cars.

I was like, okay, valid points... then I got up to the last sentence.

No. Don’t be one of those people.

I don’t care about football, either, but the Broncos haven’t disappeared yet.

I was definitely talking about enthusiast cars in the classic sporty sense. But really, as long as they make something interesting, or just have a direction they’re aimed at you know? Jeep does offroad, Buick does comfort... Neither are sporty but they have brand identity.

I’d accept dirt cheap too, but no US companies sell things at a low enough price to qualify

100% joking. I used to stay up to date on the latest and greatest in the mobile tech world but I just couldn’t take the comment sections. Makes front page here look like the closest knit brothers of all time.

Haha. I like Android but prefer iOS; either way, devout fanboys on both sides irritate me.

That’s why supercross/motocross is the only racing worth watching. Bikes are relatively stock, there are no pit strategies, only riders making a break for the finish line in the most physically demanding sport in the world. Sean MacDonald was covering it before Jalopnik killed Lanesplitter.

This was a couple weeks ago:

Who with the what?

I’m not a fan of watching or reading about racing. (Daytona 500 excepted)

Find some racing you like. Find some racing you like and fucking do it!

Or is this some “meta” crap that should be on Facebook?

No that’s what I’m saying! I’ve done autox, track days, drifting, rallyx and hillclimbs. Loved all of them. But watching it, especially the inaccessible to the common people series like F1... Ugh. Just can’t do it

I like hearing about Dakar, but I think it’s because it’s always written about as more of an adventure than a race

I’m still upset about Sean being kicked out. Yeah, supercross/motocross is something I can get behind.

I also wish the weekends had a little more variety...no offense stef. Race coverage good, other things also good. Seems like the weekend would be a good time to pick and choose from oppositeblog

Agreed. I’m hoping Kat starts posting more now that she’s doing auto journalism full-time. And Stef has a cool Porsche that would be interesting to read about...

I’ve only been around a few years but it seems like there used to be more oppo posts on the front page?

I’m almost exactly the opposite. Being in the motorsports industry I occasionally get bored of Jalopnik/Oppo coverage, road cars don’t get me excited the way a purpose-built racing vehicle does.

its had its ups and downs. Its currently in a permanent down phase. very rarely one is shared, but it used to be somewhat common. The new phase is taking oppo authors and putting their content out on the fp directly.

Fair enough. Now, I’ll absolutely salivate over a build thread, seeing the technical details, parts chosen and how they solve whatever problems arise. And I love the articles discussing the race-specific tech, aero, etc. Guess we just need more articles period?

That’s the beauty of the FP. Especially on the weekends. They may be taking F1 a bit far. But in all fairness there isn’t much else going on right now.

sorry bitch but im’ma force-feed you race cars and racing and race cars and racing and race cars and racing and race cars and racing and race cars and racing and race cars and racing until your liver is big enough for FOIE GRAS!!!

But really, thanks for getting this out there. It’s great to see another side of the coin that is rarely seen.

Not even short highlight vids?

That’s what I watch. There are too many different forms of racing for me to follow each one, and I can’t make up my mind about which ONE series I would set aside time to watch. So I just wait for videos of whatever happened that was remarkable or interesting. For the past couple of years, I stayed up to watch sll of Le Mans, but that’s an exception that I make only once per year.
