Pros and cons for each. Keep in mind, being an adventurer, explorer or whatever doesn’t directly correlate to being a car guy/girl. Some people want to get off the beaten path without worrying about what to do when their 15 year old Jeep falls apart on the trail. A lot of us on the other hand wouldn’t have it any other way

1: Wes Siler....not Wes Silver

2: eh. he isnt wrong. keep in mind the audience he is writing for compared to us.

judging just by the headline:

makes sense. If you’re going off road a ways trust is paramount. the worst case scenario of buying a used BMW over a new Camry are some headaches, waiting on a tow and losing a few thousand dollars. buying that sketchy RR because its the same price as a base 4runner...being stranded 20 miles from the next person could be go a lot worse than getting the wrong BMW.

Yeah, just thought it was funny considering his past employment.

meh. I dont really blame it.

I consider myself a pretty big gear head. I am not entirly adverse to leasing a car.

most of my fun is done on the bike, so if I need the car, I REALLY need it. Leasing would be great for me.

I’m currently about to put a new radiator in my XJ and the caliper seized up randomly this evening. Yeah, I can 100% see why he says that.

Very good point.

In the middle of nowhere, reliability is very important. One could argue that “fixibility” is just as important, and older, simpler vehicles probably have a leg up there (assuming one has the know-how, tools and spare parts).

Kind of like race car drivers who have boring daily drives to get around. They get their thrill at work.

Hahaha! Wasn’t saying it was wrong, just not the normal Jalop mindset.

Depends on whether you like to keep your money or not. Depreciation is the main reason to never buy a new car. And if you buy a new car, it is just going to need maintenance and repairs anyway as it ages, so you save nothing on that front either.

exactly. when the work/fun car provides all you want, why bother with something that at the end of the day, is a quarter of the thrills with WAY more of the pain in the ass factor?

I like Wes and kinda miss him on Jalopnik.

I can’t agree with him here. New costs a ton, new is usually built on compromise and if you’re making payments you won’t go places you might go in a used machine. Safety is the only thing I can agree with.

I admit I stopped reading as soon as I saw this.

“It’s all the car anyone needs”

Any “Journalist” should have 10 years taken off their life every time they publish those words. That’s like a Doctor telling you Tofu is the only food you ever need to eat.

(Full disclosure fun.... I DD a 1995 F150 named Crusty. Purchased for $800 with 131,xxx miles 2.5 years ago. It’s over 171,xxx with nothing more than maintenance and expected rust related repairs.)

The combo of a crosstrek and the word “adventuremobile” tells the tale of this story. If your idea of adventure is Subaru level terrain then yeah...you’re probably the type whos knowledge of car repair shouldn’t be counted on for survival.

Yeah, I can definitely agree with new(er), but hard to encourage most to buy new, unless money’s no concern...

I’m not one for naming them either. Other people do it and..

Crusty was named by a Police Officer after getting rear ended and dropping a pound or two of Bondo off. “Who’s crusty machine is this?” It stuck.

Betty, my 350x was named by a friend after riding it and hearing Ram Jam’s Black Betty during the adrenaline rush afterward. It stuck.

Pretty Boy, my 200x was named by a competitor after placing in a “hare scramble” with a bunch of Quads and Bikes. It stuck. (I hope he was talking about the trike at least.)

He’s not wrong. Most people should probably lease a cheap Toyota than buy a used BMW.

He’s acknowledging that he’s one of us Jalops but most people aren’t and that’s ok. My best friend is currently leasing a Corolla and he loves it, he wants to get another when he gives it back in two years. He’s not a gearhead and his apartment wouldn’t let him change the oil much less any meaningful maintenence.

I see so many people around me driving cars that they can barely afford to keep on the road just because its a Merc or a Land Rover.

Honestly, people don’t need much more than a hatchback or mid sized sedan.

I used to use a used BMW as an “adventure mobile”. I must be brave. Or I just know how to fix shit when it breaks. I wouldn’t recommend too strenuous an adventure for people who can’t fix things. Now I use a used Wrangler which has actually had more things break than the BMW.

Most people should *buy a *used Toyota. I definitely agree that way too many people buy way too much more car than they need or can afford (spoken by the guy that bought a used E90 M3, but waited until he could truly afford it).

I disagree on the buying used always being the better option. Think of it this way; if someone only has $200-$250 a month to spend on a car and very little to put down, sure a used car could be  good. But if they have the option to get a new car where maintenence is covered for the first year and everything is guaranteed to work for the same price and the catch is they have to give it back in 3 years, they’re probably going to pick the second option because it’s much more likely to be worry free.

Cars stress most people out. They hate the idea of an expensive money pit that they have to have. Leasing removes a lot of that stress for people.

I’m leasing my daily drivers. They get boring easily anyways and the money I’m saving a month is going to my weekend car fund. I’ll be buying my V6 1LE Camaro though lol
