Okay: serious (if horrible) tire question

Does anyone know of a fairly large diameter grippy tire rated for north of 1,800lb? The kicker: fitting on a wheel no more than 8" wide with a bolt pattern of 5 on 5.5/127. Bonus credit: under $250 a tire.

Wheel diameter?

For anyone wondering: I am, as a thought experiment, trying to verify what autocrossing a ‘59 Lincoln would cost. If, as I’m starting to suspect, the *least* expensive option is to actually autocross on whitewalls, I will laugh my ass off.

Nitto 555R in 275/60/15.

28" in diameter, will fit on 8" wide rim. Load is 2100+. $155 from Jeg’s.

No chance of meaningful results with stock wheel diameter: 14". That’s why I opened the window on larger wheel sizes - which *are* somewhat available for the pattern in question, but only because Jeep and a few other weirdos have used it for a while. Final overall (stock) diameter is 30", but sizes as small as 26" for the combo or even smaller would work.

Very informative, thanks. If a big enough offset wheel exists (the Cragar 342 series may work), then the nefarious intent may be carried out.

I was wondering where this was going. Kudos to you for even thinking about this - if you actually do it, we need video!

Kinda wonder what the sidewall stiffness is like, though. :D

The Firestone F560's Coker makes are 80 aspect ratio and made of very soft rubber (treadwear rating 160 I think). Might fit what you need.

Unless by grippy you mean on something other than road.

Also - how wide is the car/what’s the gap between pylons? Need to make sure the car will fit. :) :)

How are you measuring the rim width? If you’re going lip to lip you have to subtract 1". 15x8 measured would actually be a 15x7 rim.

There are a few tires in the 28" to 30" diameter depending on rim width. You’re getting close to LT tires at that size and weight rating though.

Hey, you didn’t mention that in your original post!

Seriously though, you can find street tires in that size too. Or maybe step down to 275/50 for less fat bottomed sidewalls make the rockin world go round.

Load rating, sadly, is not even close. Because land barge.

Which size are you looking at? The load rating depends on the size.

edit: I see they don’t make any wide ones for 14" wheels. Oh well.

I am basing things on the fact that the Lincoln’s stock tires have a nearly 9" section width, because they are a (round) bias ply. Therefore, I can go up from there with a performance rim, but only slightly. Probably 8" nominal rim, in other words.

The vehicle in question is one of these:

The car is over 80" wide at the widest point. Don’t know what pylon width would end up being - may need to furnish bribes. This wouldn’t be any time soon.

I looked at the largest size in the search return at Coker. If they have one that would suit, it didn’t show up in a search.

Possibly. I figured there would be something of a knowledge base here, but searchable autocross knowledge on teh webs doesn’t typically cover how one goes about autocrossing (or even track daying) a 5400lb car.

Why don’t you just go with a lower profile tire for better acceleration and handling?

You’re not going to find anything that is as tall as the original tires that isn’t bias ply.

Kinja'd!!!

These are what I have on my Suburban... 10 ply because fat, heavy tow pig. Terrible for autocross- but so is a ‘59 Lincoln!

02/24/2017 at 18:17, STARS: 0

Lower profile is fine, to a point. The car is, however, very low already due to design for oldster access with those huge 30" bias plies. The wheel size would have to go up, and I don’t know how much. Also, I searched for all F560s, but it’s possible the search didn’t work properly. At least a 15" wheel is, I think, a given.

It’s funny how that is probably a better autocrossing tire than stock.

This calc might help. 255/60-15 might be a good fit. I’ve run up to 275/60s on an 8" rim but that’s about the max.

Nice! That size should help with sidewall flex a bit.

The only trick is, I don’t know what’s out there that’s even close to a performance tire. As a test, I looked up what was available as a *summer* tire, and there’s only one even in that size. Over 300 a tire and recommended for some Rolls. So, in other words, the only options I know so far are for a grippy-but-flexy muscle car tire for a lot of money, a big wheel, big tire with good characteristics for All The Money, or a big wheel, big tire combo that’s a good-ish all season for cheaper.

There are three big advantages to the last - price per (destroyed) tire, less strain from being *very* grippy on suspension, etc., and daily-drivable, leaving whitewalls for show use. Substantially better tire for hard corners than stock. It’s just.. I kind of *would* like to know what a really grippy tire can do with something that big.

Kinja'd!!! "Tristan" (casselts)

Certainly better than bias plys, yes!

...and the original style tires are so expensive ($250+) that I can literally buy tires *and* wheels to outfit for autocross for around 70%, which, while not *great* tires, would be far better.

02/24/2017 at 18:53, STARS: 0

I don’t think you’d see a big gain from a super grippy tire over a goodish muscle car tire. The car’s weight and suspension would override the extra grip (just a theory). That thing has to be in the 5000lb range.

Something like 5200lb dry, yes. DESPITE BEING A UNIBODY. The Galaxie has a full frame under it and is only a foot and a half shorter, but THREE QUARTERS OF A TON lighter.

It’s a 19', 80" wide car with a four-barrel 430 in it and a three speed auto, with truck size drum brakes. Coils all around, interestingly. The ‘59 is the same size at the body as the largest Town Cars from the ‘70s, which edge it just barely on overall length due to bumpers.

The right kind of bias ply for the big bastard aren’t actually any cheaper in a blackwall that I’ve seen. 9.40 and 9.50-14s are so very special...
