Does anyone have adaptive cruise control in their car? If so how is it?

Kinja'd!!!

Only asking because parents looking for a newish used suv around $42000 dollars. If their gonna look for something at that price, might as well have a bunch of tech that only I would know how to use.

I do. It’s called my right foot, and it works well.

The controller is sometimes an asshole, though.

I have manually adaptive cruise control. I feel much more connected with the car, bro. No autotragic adaptive cruise control for me!

My wife’s Impreza has it and I like it.

The one quirk, which is more a fault of the Subaru cruise control than adaptive cruise in general, is the accelerate and coast buttons work in 5 mph increments. So if I’m at 70 and want to go to 73 but not 75, I have to cancel cruise, accelerate to 73, and reset cruise.

That annoyance aside, it’s nice for not having to constantly turn cruise off every time some slowpoke oozes into the left lane.

The cars where I work have it. I think it works just fine.

I don’t like it so I just don’t use it when I have to drive them on the highway.

I’ve only experienced adaptive cruise control in the current Honda Ridgeline.

When its engaged it seamlessly follows and varies your speed according to the vehicle in front. You can also set your following distance too.

If it loses lock on the vehicle in front, it simply disengages.

My wife’s 2017 Outback has Subaru’s “EyeSight” system, which includes adaptive cruise control. I thought I’d hate it along with all the other features of the EyeSight system, but I really like it all. It’s really nice to be able to set it and not have to worry about pedals. If you’re stuck behind an 18-wheeler, you can wait until you get a gap in the left lane, merge over, pass, and go back to the right lane all without having to touch a pedal. It’s very handy when traffic slows and when someone slow merges in front of you, too. Now I know this is Jalopnik and saying that I enjoy a little less driver involvement is blasphemy, but come on, it’s cruising on the interstate. It’s not Raikkonen on Silverstone.

AtlasM mentioned a “quirk” about only being able to set cruise in 5mph intervals. That is not true for our car. The accel/set toggle has double detents, similar to a power window switch with auto up/down, where the partial press sets in 1mph intervals and the full press sets in 5mph.

I recently drove a 2016 RAV4 with it and I like it. Didn’t have to mess with anything when you came up on a slower car and once they got out of the way it would speed up back to where you had it set. I can imagine it would not be good in heavy traffic though as it leaves a generous cushion between you and the car in front so you’d probably constantly have people cutting in front of you.

My stepdad has it in his E61 and really loves it, BUUUUUUT he tends to overly rely on tech (when the rear parking sensors in another car broke he constatly scratched the bumper) and told me a rather scary story when I visited last week. “There was this fog, but I didn’t have to slow down because the car senses if there is a car in front and automatically slows down.” WTF???? I don’t think this is how the system is supposed to work. Also impressive how he managed to override any self-preservation instincts that usually make you slow down when you can’t see shit.

I guess it’s the same as with any other semi-autonomous tech, can be nice on long drives when used as intended, but humankind has a tendency to not use it as intended.

Depends on what SUV. The Audi system that’s been around is great and the new Merc system is awesome. Those have radar and will even do stop-and-go traffic with ease.

The system in Acura and Fords, the older ones that don’t work below 25 mph, are not that good. A little slower to respond and generally not as comforting. Still waaaaay better than convention cruise though. I think both of those companies are introducing/have introduced better stop/go capable systems though. Probably still not quite on the level of Merc or Tesla in terms of fluidity though.

Look into what adaptive cruise it’s using and when that generation of tech first debuted. The newest ones are really, really easy to use.

I have it on my 2017 GTI and I hate it for a number of reasons.

1. If the radar goes out of alignment you have to take it into the dealer and have a certified tech haul in a special alignment board and tweak the the radar, the hamster wheel, and God knows what else, to get it re-aligned. This has only happened to me once, and it was when I was in town and not preparing to go on a trip. It took the dealer 4 hours to fix. If had to get this fixed in a hurry for a trip, I would have been SOL.

2. You can only use the cruise control in adaptive mode. I hate this. My old Dodge Charger had adaptive cruise control, but you could disable it and still have regular old, stupid cruise control work. I wish the VW had this feature.

3. The adaptive control itself is OK I guess, but I still like being in control of my vehicle. It takes too much control away from the driver IMHO.

I like the nannies. My mom’s current car has rear cross traffic alert and it is ultra useful.

It’s seems that different acc systems can do stop and go way better. Especially Tesla and audi systems.

I think these systems are designed to make driving more convenient not for you to just not you your eyes.
