The Merced....errrrr Infinti QX30 is rather appealing for an MKC replacement, what does oppo know of this cross over crossover?

it appears to be some kind of overwheeled AWD hatchback Jim.

I like how it looks from the outside but I think it and the GLA are a bit dreadful. Some of the mini crossovers are tiny inside with terrible visibility, for example the Mazda CX-3. When I was shopping the mini crossovers for my wife I was shocked with how small the CX-3 is on the inside. The QX30 is bigger on the outside but I have a feeling it’s similarly cramped inside.

Looks pretty, but I’d rather not have a Japanese luxury car that’s actually the cheapest it could be made by ze Germans.

C&D says the visibility is a bit awkward due to the higher belt line. Versus the GLA reviews say the QX30 “feels” a little better inside and not quite a budget cutter.
I’m car shopping for the wife as well. What did you end up with?

Mercedes GLC Instead? It’s quite nice to drive, and gets similar Gas mileage even though it’s the class above

You should edit your comment to reflect the parlance of our times. Or use less abbreviations.

But yes - everywhere I’ve seen it reviewed they say it’s a nicer GLA.

They are tiny. As in a huge step down in size from the MK C. I know you have a 500, but make sure your wife is OK downsizing. These are basically Juke-sized, maybe smaller.

Reviews say visibility is weird. Tall belt line, small feel. I may check it out. The wife is open to a 500 of her own so size isn’t too much of an issue, but visibility is!

We got an Impreza Limited hatchback. She doesn’t care about performance. Wanted something with good winter capability, cargo space, a back seat that fits adults, and good fuel economy (on regular gas) in a compact overall package.

Looked at things like the CX-3, HR-V, etc. The HR-V was nice and has a huge back seat but we leased and Honda wasn’t running any lease specials so it would’ve been like $100/month more than our Impreza when sticker price on both was around $27k. She prefers the lower ride height and no cladding of the Impreza vs. Crosstrek.

Me personally, these mini crossovers are supposed to be practical, even though they’re small. We’re talking basically a 5-door hatch. If you can’t put an adult in the back seat then they’re worthless. The back seat of the HR-V is like a limo. Our Impreza, I’m 5'11" and fit in the back with room to spare. The CX-3, I set the driver’s seat for myself and could barely fit in back, let alone sit there for any length of time.

We have no kids so the back seat isn’t getting used all the time, but we want at least one vehicle that can function as a real 4-seater if we’re going somewhere with another couple, and my car doesn’t do that. So we needed hers to.

For you, I dunno if your MKC is the 2.0 or the 2.3 but I assume you want something that’s not much of a step down in power. Everything in the small/medium premium crossover class: Audi Q3, BMW X1, Infiniti QX30, MB GLA, Mini Countryman. Other stuff like the MKC, RDX, NX are a bit bigger. Personally, anything in this segment that doesn’t pass the sit-behind-myself test is crossed off immediately.

You described our situation pretty well! Except we have put people in the back of my Fiat and got laughed at by the valet. Our MKC is the 2.0 and the wife doesn’t feel it lacks the power she needs. As for actual back seat sitting, very few times will that actually be used for us. I do agree it’s nice if it can be somewhat comfortable though.

I was looking at the NX when I thought of the QX. Based on what you’re saying it sounds like the NX may be the better choice.

I’ve never been a fan of those SUV coupe things either...

However, a BMW x4 drives a lot nice than it looks.

the only experience ive had with this car is at autoshows, my thoughts are... it looks fine on the outside, but gosh it feels tight in there, and probably the worst part is the infotaintment system, which was abysmally slow, taking about 5-10 seconds to register a tap (touchscreen) and then loading what you wanted.

I haven’t sat in one yet, but I’ve seen them and the MB both up close. They look... challenging to see out of. That being said, since they are “premium” vehicles they probably come with all manner of backup cameras, blind spot warning, forward collision avoidance, etc. to help overcome the visibility issues. Personally if I was looking at this category of vehicle I’d probably just get an NX200t for resale alone, because, let’s face it, none of them are going to be particularly interesting things to drive. FWIW C&D placed the Lexus ahead of the MB, Infiniti and Audi in a comparison last year, saying that it punched above class in fit and finish. They did give first overall to the X1. Once you get over the OMG WTF FWD BMW! thing, the X1 actually seems like the best value in the class considering that it is both more spacious and doesn’t seem to give up much in dynamics. But the German quality kind of scares me.

It’s basically this on stilts, so it’s smaller than a Golf. I recently read a review (either on TTAC or Jalopnik, can’t find it because their search options are shite) recently that stated that the gearbox on the Infinity is terrible and pretty much ruins an otherwise somewhat decent albeit small car.

I think I just read that article. It was the NX that made me think of the QX in the first place actually. Other’s have supported the NX200t as a top choice

that is unfortunate. I’m not ready to rule it out, but most of what I’m looking at and what others are saying is pointing me back to the Lexus NX200t

If you want something a bit smaller than the MKC, the new BMW X1 & Mini Countryman are on the same platform. X1 has 240 hp vs. 189 hp for the Countryman S. On the outside they’re similar to the GLA/QX30 but more efficiently packaged inside. Audi Q3 is similarly dinky on the inside as the GLA/QX30.

Lexus NX & Acura RDX are bigger than the MKC, particularly the RDX, but it weighs less than the NX.

Another thought is the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0t. It’s in that same general size ballpark as the NX & RDX but obviously not the same premium brand. But I’ve been impressed by the quality of recent Hyundais especially when they’re loaded up. I had an uber a couple weeks ago in a new Tucson and it had a panorama sunroof and heated rear seats. The Tucson is nice but maxes out at 1.6t 175 hp.

Her mother has a genesis sedan from a few years back before Genesis was it’s own sub thing. Every time I’m surprised at how nice it initially is. Then I sit in the back seat and feel how dang awful the ride is, but from the driver’s seat, quite nice. I hadn’t considered that, but I’d assume it’s a worth while deal!

Yeah, well, maybe, but that thing is so extremely hideous from every angle and I have yet to see a colour that disguises that.

When you are going down the rabbit hole of small-ish crossovers why not go for the X1, that one at least is somewhat pleasing to the eye IMHO.

And let’s be honest, there’s not much street cred to be had from driving any of those, so who cares which wheels, or how many are driven?

truth! It’s my wife’s car. Truly she just has to like how it looks. She isn’t interested in even test driving anything. Very odd experience buying a car with her.

I may check out the x1. I know it’s the most well loved by C&D
