I always knew my grandfather worked for Quaker State oil, but last night I found out that my grandmother worked for Morgan Motors in New Jersey in the 1930s, and she flew in an airplane over a Bears/Royals game in Montreal with the Morgans (a big deal in the ‘30s!). It sure does run in the blood!

That’s pretty cool!

My Grandfather worked in the oil & gas industry for 70 years (except for a few years “off” during WWII). He started working as a ditch digger for Gilmore Oil in southern California right out of high school. He worked his way up to he head of production in the oil fields. Then transitioned into sales and management. He spent the bulk of his career working for Mobil (Gilmore sold out to them after WWII), but worked for one company or another until he was 87.

That’s really cool, literally worked his way from ditch digger to head of production! As far as I know my Grandfather was in the financial section of Quaker State for his entire career (but I’m sure somebody will tell me differently someday). My mother worked there for a while as a secretary too.

Yep! It all started when somebody sent him to Mr. Gilmore’s office with a message. Once he was in there, he found Mr. Gilmore perseverating over the giant map of oil pipelines and wells in his office, complaining that it was always out of date. My grandfather said, “I know how to use a surveyor’s transit. I could survey all the new lines, and draw them in on the map for you.”

That’s how he got his first promotion. He lied, he had no idea how to use a transit. He made a beeline to the library after work and checked out a book on it to teach himself over the weekend.

He thought the world of Mr. Gilmore.

Very cool. We have a lot of automobile heritage on here. My father and Uncle were original Tucker francise owners . My dad had one of the Waltz Blue Tuckers for about a month in NC before they took them all to DC. When that failed he went back into construction and ended up as the foreman constructing about 15 blimp hangers for the US Navy.

If you find out any more info please post it. I love this type of stuff.
