Undeniably cool looking, though really cooler than I want. But the look is growing on me slowly. Perhaps if it were a 75-series tire instead of a 70, I’d like it better. Remember that O.C. is an old family guy...

The set of rims was $75, the used tires were $20 apiece, and the mount and balance cost $15 at the local VoTech high school.

There is definitely an Oppo faction that favors the old rim and dog dish look, but I can’t get there...

I welcome your thoughts and comments on this.

Might be alone in this but I like the stock style wheels. I’d just strip off/blast the wheels and give them a fresh coat of white paint with a clear coat. No dog dish caps.

I think they look good, are you going to try and claybar the paint?

We actually had the last set on our van. Nice.

Steel wheels are best wheels.

Looks good with the S10 (I think?) wheels, IMO.

I’m in the clean up the steelies/dog dish camp, I think either option would be perfect.

Those rallyes look nice. They’d have to have a GMC center cap though...

That’s an option. They’d have to be 15s though; stock on this van was 14". It was a special order that I bought from the original owner with 80k original miles.

By either option, do you mean steelies versus the current Camaro mags?

Yes, in this day and age 14" wheels are not really worth having on a lot of stuff.

I’m not familiar with the term claybar . I’ll probably try Barkeeper’s Best Friend, or else Comet and a green scrubby pad, a la David Freiburger.

Those are Camaro rims. The look is growing on me a little, and the price was certainly right, but I may switch to a 75-series tire.

Certainly they have the look, but they’re also a good deal heavier. I was told once that unsprung weight savings are worth more than sprung weight savings, pound for pound.

Clay Bar is for the paint work on the van, not the wheels it will really make the paint shine. For the wheels if those are what I think they are (Off a late 90s S-10) they are clear coated, so use something made for wheels or the aluminum will oxidize.

02/24/2017 at 13:17, STARS: 0

Yeah but unsprung weight doesn’t really matter unless you’re on a track day or hauling a boat down a mountain pass. I don’t think I’d notice the difference from behind the wheel.

Kinja'd!!!

The exact look I want is a slightly stylized, plain steel wheel, but my options are slightly limited because my bolt pattern is 5x4.75. One of these years, I’ll find a set like this, then get them bead blasted and powder-coated silver.

Yes, I realized that you were talking about the body paint.

The rims come from a Camaro and I’ll leave them just as they are. I don’t want flashy; I want utile .

Steelies versus dog dish, although I guess they could kind of be one in the same.

Whoever told you those are Camaro wheels is a liar. While S10 and Camaro wheels are interchangeable, those wheels were only ever offered on the S10 from the factory.

Yep, they were the factory rims on my ‘98 S-10. They’re good looking wheels, but definitely not Camaro wheels.

That they’re S-10 rims makes me feel better about having them on Rusty. The 70-series rubber is about right as well. That size was a recommendation from an Old Guy on another forum.

Haha! Come on man, it’s a ‘71 Vandura that you going to cruise on the highway. You will never be able to feel the difference in weight of the wheels. Steelies and dog dishes fo lyfe!

Yeah, I think it’s a good size tire for it. Put the front wheel on with center caps, and take a picture from farther back.

You’re really nickel and diming yourself to death with all these used tires. If you want to drive cross country with this thing, spend the money on whatever wheels you want and get some new tires in whatever size makes you happy.

Personally, those wheels look crappy without center caps.

Kinja'd!!! "Rusty Vandura - www.tinyurl.com/keepoppo" (rustyvandura)
02/25/2017 at 19:01, STARS: 0

Um, the entire van looks pretty crappy...

Once I get it actually RUNNING, and I can shift it into gear, and make certain that the front suspension is intact and the brakes, then maybe I can think about registering it. And start driving it around town. I think that at that time, perhaps, it might be a good time to go shopping for some tires. Just getting a set of rollers on this thing has been a chore and I am broke and I have two kids in college and oh, yeah: they suspended me from my job this week on account of the malice of a fellow educator, so in all, I’m largely satisfied with the progress I’m making.

Kinja'd!!!

I have the center caps, but they need to say GMC or I can’t use them. Besides, they’re plastic and slightly cheesy. I have some other ideas about how to dress the rims up a little bit, but the mechanicals are the first order of business. Actually, the weather stripping is pretty high on the list as it’s rotten and crumbling on the entire vehicle.

Wheels, weatherstripping, window regulating mechanism in the driver door, front door latches. I’ve already bought the latches; Dave the Car Guy helped me with some part numbers on those.
