You must be indoctrinated with the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. If you get all the way through it you get 10 internet points.

As a California kid that moved to Tennessee I’ve known this song for years... wait that doesn’t make sense. But really I’ve always been fascinated with this wreck/song.

One of the radio stations in Duluth plays this on repeat all day on Nov. 10 every year. What do you think brought her down ?

November storms on Superior, we call them lakes but they are inland seas.

Well yeah, I’m very familiar with the lakes. I meant what do you think actually brought her down? Loose hatch covers, hitting the bottom at 6 fathom shoals, ect. I personally believe that her hull was very brittle and that as she came through the trough of a wave, s rouge wave broke her back. severing power to the bow. This is supported by the captain of the Arthur M. Anderson’s accounts of seeing to very large waves headed towards the Fitzgerald in the time leading to her demise.

What’s up with us California people knowing about the Edmund Fitzgerald?

I think it was overloaded quite often. That would kill anything.

I don’t think there was on singular cause, a mix of structural failures and storm waves hitting at just the right time to sink her. It is not a simple thing to break a ship of that size in two.

Oh definitely, the hull would have had to have been weakened, and she was recorded as having deficient keel repair welds.

We saw Gord in town on his 2014 tour, he can still rock a velour suit like a mofo;

Weak Hull combined with slightly leaking hatches, combined with extreme waves putting huge strains on the hull, basically take every theory about the sinking, combine them into a bunch of small problems, that’s what brought her down.

And I have to link to the parody song done by WDVE’s old Morning Show when Chevy stopped Camaro/Firebird production...

I like the shoaling theory. Potentially earlier in the voyage, due to the sea state, some shoals that would normally be too deep to be a problem, were close enough to damage the keel. The continued battering then exasperated the damage until the ultimate failure.

I’m in the shoaling boat. (Well, no, but yes.)

They communicated that she was taking on water but “holding her own” - but with the sea state (level: Lake Superior in November), it was probably impossible to tell for sure how low she was riding with the added weight.

The windows on the rear superstructure were blown in, as were the last few cargo hatches, which point to a large wave coming up and over the bow, swamping the deck, piling up in front of the superstructure and crashing through the hatches into the hold. The debris field indicates that she broke in two on the surface, or close to it. She was likely gone in a handful of seconds.

Many consider Superior to be the most dangerous body of water in the world, with good reason.

Not sure, but Gordon Lightfoot had a bit of a following down there. My dad listened to Gordy’s music all the time and dad had barely left the state at the time. He still has never been that far east, so it obviously didn’t come from being there or knowing people there (it was long before dad knew the Internet existed, let alone would he have used it).

Definitely a mystery.

I’ve always assumed it was shoaling, compounded by structural defects & the increased load line.

Does the aftertaste have a nice clean break, or does it flood you with flavor?
