Can you think of any cars that only make sense in sets?

I know that the Panamera has a lot of strengths in its own right, but it just doesn’t make sense to me as a Porsche that someone would buy on its own. Every time I see one, I always wonder if the owner also has a 911. It just makes more sense as a car that you buy if you already own a 911, realize you need a sedan, and hey, why not keep it in the family, rather than a sedan that you buy because you want a German sedan and don’t already own a Porsche.

The thing is, I can’t really think of any other car makes where one model only really makes sense if you own another from the same make.

I guess that an SLK would be kind of an oddball if you don’t own another Mercedes, which is funny, because I don’t think a Z4 would be weird as someone’s only BMW.

Any other ideas?

you’re crazy the Panamera works perfect on its own.

Yeah, I could see the Panamera as a way into the brand’s performance capabilities without having to deal with a 911's usability drawbacks.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that it’s an amazing car on its own and I know why someone would buy it. It just seems strange to think that anyone would spend six-figures on a Porsche sedan and not already own a Porsche coupe.

A Ford Tempo only works well next to a Bentley Mulsanne

Well for the longest time Kristin was my only car. It’s not that common to only have a Pontiac Solstice on its own, another Pontiac or not.

Now I’m thinking about how fun it would be to pick up a date in a Bentley Mulsanne then when you take them back to your “place” but pull up to a trailer with a bunch of beaters outside of it (that you own). The things I would do with unlimited funds.

VW Microbus and Beetle, back in the day. The Beetle is too small to carry all that much short of roof racks, etc., and the old Microbuses are too slow and strained to be that good an idea for a daily driver. Parts share and tools make it a no-brainer, with the microbus as *usually* too impractical to have as an only car.

For 1957 Fords, you have the combo suggested by this ad:

Specifically, a Fairlane and a Thunderbird, with the two-seats-only configuration running hard against the end-of-fifties slump and probably the biggest reason the ‘58 squarebird has two rows.

On the topic of parts sharing, I did consider at one point getting a Cobalt SS as a DD instead. Same Ecotec engine, I can just stock up on oil and filters. Just didn’t really want to go back to FWD.

Cobalt and HHR wouldn’t be a bad option for sharing of more than just engine - and less self-harming than a Neon/PT combo.

woah, what is going on there?

are those both thunderbirds?

is it now and 5 years into the future when that shrub grew big enough to block out the fence and she realized her only dress was camoflauged by the orange paint?

does she always carry her hat box around?

The reason I included the second cropping version of the same ad with more horrible colors is that it shows the headlight better, which is distinctive. ‘57 Fairlane - aka midsize/fullsize.

They’re the same shot, just cropped differently and given sixty years to age.

Yup, some interior bits can be modified. I fixed my door handle twice ordering Cobalt parts.

The only thing that should be sold in conjunction with a Panamera is a trip to the opticians.

Honestly. They’re a modern Ford Scorpio.

I kinda like the Scorpio, especially the Cosworth. I couldn’t care less about the Panamera though.

No accounting for taste ;)

jk of course ;) the Cosworth engine is a really neat piece of kit. I’ve seen a couple of swaps into Reliant Scimitars which are very very tempting :)

That swap does sound intriguing!
