Which Cheap Old Toyota Should I Buy?

One of the worst things about me as an enthusiast is that I don’t like to own cars from multiple brands. If I daily drive a Ford, I want a Ford for a toy. Currently my daily is the Land Cruiser, so I’d need a toy-Toyota.

I’ve got a bonus coming from my job, and I’d like to spend it on some cheap older Toyota. Here’s a few ideas, albeit not these exact cars which come from local Craigslist cities.

AW11 MR2

Kinja'd!!!

Cheap and plentiful, available t-tops, this would probably be my top choice. I could also be talked to an SW20.

An early Supra:

Kinja'd!!!

I’ve always loved the look of this generation Supra, it’s just tough to find one in New England that’s more than 60% metal.

A late 80-early 90s Celica:

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t even mind that they’re front drive, anything with the pop up headlights looks great.

A later Celica:

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t know why, but I’ve always liked these. This one in the picture has like 30k miles and the psycho is asking $12k for it. Yikes.

My plan for the car, whatever it is, involves cheap bolt on flares and the widest steel wheels I can fit on it. I think the MR2 or early Celica would be my best bets for that.

Did I miss anything? Which is Zoidberg’s cue to shout ‘Tercel wagon!’ in my face for three hours straight.

MR2's are great (not biased AT ALL), the Mk2 Celica-Supra is great, that 4th-gen Celica though....unless it’s an AllTrac/GTFour with the AWD and a turbo....just avoid it. Not interesting or fun at all. 7th gen Celica GTS is pretty ok though. Look at the 83-85 Celica. They were RWD and the GTS had the same independent rear suspension as the Celica-Supra as well.

My mom had an AW11, but sold it well before I got my license. I’m still a bit bitter about that.

My only MR2 related concern was if I would fit, since I’m 5 foot 11 and about 300lbs, but I’ve heard they have a lot of room in them for a small car.

The MK2 Supra has always been my favorite, especially the P type with the hatch spoiler and the flares

They do. The MK1 especially. Definitely “try it on” first though. I’m 5' 10" but only 190lb and I adore it. Some of my larger friends seem to have issues though. The biggest thing is how big the stock steering wheel is. A smaller aftermarket wheel helps with knee room a lot.

AW11 MR2 all the way. I remember shopping around for one before I got my Miata, and guys on forums were saying that they were 6' 2“ and big, and they didn’t have issues with fitting into the AW11.

EDIT: You’re in New England. Stay away from the remaining AW11's until I buy one! Get a boring Celica!

MR2 or Supra. Oppo doesn’t have enough Supra. Just be wary of the mkIII, they like to throw rods and such.

There’s really nothing for MR2s out here right now. There’s a rusty red one for $1500 with transmission issues...you can have that one if you want it, haha.

My dad sold a ‘69 Chevelle SS with a 427 (originally a 396) when I was born. I still feel really bad about it.

If we’re talking before birth, I have much bigger fish to fry than the AW11. My mom owned and totaled an E-Type.

Id say Aw11, its the most special, if not the supra.

Aside for all of them, Supra or AW11. Aw11 might have more rust?

The newer Celicas are cheap around here, but it’s at the bottom of the list...I’d need to be desperate. AW11 seems to be the overwhelming favorite.

That being said, mr2 all the way. Most unique car = most fun car.

The last generation Celica is actually a very good chassis for autox purposes, provided it’s the GTS model with the 2ZZ-GE and the 6-speed.

The main issue is the improper cylinder head bolt torque spec from the factory. BHG’s are super common on the 7M engines. Easily repaired and prevented though.

About it having to be a Toyota? It’s totally weird, I’m faulty. But once I had a Ford truck for a daily driver, a Jaguar XJ12 as a garage queen, and a Corvair as a toy and I had no idea how to handle it. I need to just have one brand at a time.

I’ve driven all those a little, I’d say you need to start test driving. Best way to cross cars off a bucket list is to find out how terrible they are in real life. My pick would probably be the mintest one, because that would probably mean the difference between sitting on jackstands most of the time or actually getting driven. that’s just me. If they were all immaculate and the same price, I’d probably take the 2ZZ Celica, then MR2, then FF Celica if it was a GTS, then Supra (Those supras stock aren’t that good, a 2JZ-GE would help a lot).

I went through a period like that where I would even go for used car test drives on my lunch break at work if they were close enough and the owner was home when I called. I once tried a clapped out cheap SC400 during my lunch that almost made me lose my lunch it was so bad.

edit - sorry honeybunchesofgoats.. replied to your thread by mistake.

At the end of the day it is your choice. An AW11 may need more work, and so will a supra, but they have flip lights!

More fun facts. The 2ZZ-GE engine in the GTS is mechanically the same as the one in the Lotus Elise, Matrix/Corolla XRS, and Vibe GT. 1.8 liter, 8250rpm, 180-ish horsepower, and the only Toyota engine to have VVTL-i, where the “L” means “lift”. Basically Toyota VTEC. Aluminum block means it’s light, 6-speed is nice. Celica has truly independent rear suspension as well, which is nice. They were THE car to have in their class back in the day for SCCA autocross, but I think the Mini Cooper S beat it out.
