Kinda Awkward When The Panamera Becomes an NSX Competitor

Kinja'd!!!

Well if in Porsche-speak the word “Turbo” translates to “Saiyan” then obviously “Turbo S” means “Super Saiyan.” But now we will have a bunch of acid green-haired Ascended Saiyans running around in the form of “Turbo S E-Hybrid.” Much like the DBZ, I’m now wondering if we’ll see the regular old “Turbo S” version that killed Frieza (err, Fezza) ever again...

The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid takes the 550 hp Panamera Turbo and adds electric motors to crank out 680 hp and 626 lb-ft.   Compared to the PanaTurbo you get 700 additional pounds of weight but retain the claimed 192 mph top speed from the outgoing 570 hp Turbo S (but apparently this hybrid hits 196 mph at least). There also seems to be an 11.5 second quarter mile sprint time (that’s a great day for a regular old showroom tires Hellcat), 31 miles of electric range, 55 mpge (25 mpg combined battery depleted). See, it’s frugal!

Pricing starts at $185,450 for the short-wheelbase and $10,000 more to stretch the car for more rear comfort and highspeed stability. That sport hybrid Acura NSX is getting pretty loaded up by the time you can consider shopping this hatch. But here is what I want to know: Are we still getting plain old Turbo S or something between the Turbo and Turbo S ‘E-Hybrid’ levels? The PanaTurbo starts at $148,000 I think. Maybe a 610 hp, all engine Turbo S-R for $164,000?

Could this lead to a full subbrand under “Turbo S?” Ya got your 911 Turbo S, your Turbo S-R with the manual, that’s a Turbo S-GTS, oh the Turbo S E-Hybrid if ya want charge it, here’s the new Turbo S-GT3 (not to be confused with the old GT2 RS, completely different headlamps), oh the new Turbo S-Turbo which uses an electric supercharger!

I keep preaching the true performance revolution is comin’. All that weight-savings will be replaced by batteries, everything will be zero emission in the city, economic around town while destroying tracks and highways, and expensive! Looking forward to that 680 hp Cayenne, RS7, and RS Q7 though. The last NA V10 is probably definitely about to die at the end of the decade...

Hey, wait a minute! I can get a turbocharged V8 in my hybrid Panamera but not my 918?! I demand a limited edition, Porsche VIP 918 Turbo!!!

Remember when an ascended Saiyan was just Vegata’s way of trying to one up Goku in the Android/Cell Saga?

Out of curiosity, where are you getting the range and MPGe numbers?

Do note that if it’s a European range number (and 31 miles looks suspiciously like the German standard “yep, we got 50 km of NEDC range, that’s exactly what you asked for” that translates to about 15-20 miles of EPA range, and possibly requiring the engine to start to complete the EPA test cycle), it won’t be anywhere near realistic for the EPA test cycle.

I grabbed them off the Car and Driver ride-along.

OK, so they’re C&D guesses. Probably better than NEDC, but I’d wait for EPA estimates.
