2017 JD Power Dependability Study is in ! Here’s the top ten: Lexus, Porsche, Toyota, Buick, Mercedes, Hyundai, BMW, Chevrolet, Honda, and Jaguar . But look at how INSANELY TERRIBLE Fiat did! The difference between Lexus (1 out of 31) to Jeep (30 out of 31) is the same distance as Jeep to Fiat!! I’m sorry, Im sorry, I shouldnt be laughing! Oh goodness, my ribs...

*Bluetooth pairing was the killer this year! So FCA may just have a serious issue with everyone complaining about that. I think we are in need of a redesigned study here J.D.

Kinja'd!!!

The Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) examines issues reported by original owners of 3-year-old vehicles. This study measures car reliability by analyzing problems experienced over the past 12 months of ownership in such areas as: features and controls; engine and transmission;entertainment and navigation; heating and cooling; the overall driving experience, and more.

I feel like that might be a small sample size issue...

In any event, the main story remains the same, don’t buy anything from FCA.

*I edited the post, sorry! I don’t actually know if the survey counted 2014-2016 MY or 2015-2017 MY. If it counted 2017 MY then this is extremely impressive, if not then Jaguar is going to plummet next year.

You’re telling me that at least 100 original 2014-2016 MY Jaaag owners combined couldn’t report more than 144 issues within the first 12 months of their ownership? I would think the minimum amount of owners would at least average two complaints each and tie with Infiniti!

Is Ford low because of their grenading auto transmissions on their economy cars?

Probably not to be honest since that wouldn’t impact enough people. It’s more likely people are complaining about their phone refusing to pair or calls being dropped. You know, real issues! But I’m not about to read through this junk, that’s what journalist are paid for...

I would love to see a list of silly infotainment problems vs. problems that affect the safety or reliability of the car as far as driving is concerned. How do I know if FCA just sucks at touchscreens in 298 different ways or if Chevrolet has 142 potentially fatal problems.

It is always interesting that Jaguar has good service and reliability because they have really been working at it, but Land Rover has neither good service or reliability and they are part of the same company.

All I’m seeing here is that my irrational want for a Fiat is even more tempting, because I am attracted to things that break constantly.

I wonder how much of that is because typically they are 2nd or 3rd cars, and don’t see the mileage the average Lexus would in a year. Besides the Cayenne and maybe Panamera anyway.

I don’t know on that one. I’ve actually noticed more issues with cars I only drive 5,000 miles or less a year than the ones I drive over 30,000 miles annually. Plus I’d personally be more likely to complain about my weekend fun car having GPS issues than my daily lux-CUV which I would have gotten used to. Easy to notice flaws when you don’t live with them daily.

I still think 110 problems per 100 cars built is sub-optimal.

That’s only 1 complaint per vehicle after living with it for a year! I’ve seen you all come up with more problems over a PICTURE of an infotainment system!!

An infotainment system is a problem in and of itself, true.

I’ve said before that I wish they would differentiate these studies to provide more relevant information. Not being able to connect to Bluetooth isn’t nearly as serious as an engine failure. Just break out infotainment into its own category, with everything else as another.

I wonder how long it will be until Tavarish bases an article around this.

Considering that cars are tens of thousands of moving parts and miles of electrical wiring along with multiple computers and the control software, I think it’s pretty great.

Admittedly my Jeep doesn’t have anywhere near that much equipment on it (and frankly who needs most of it!) but still, given the fact it’s 26 years old with 525,000km on it, it’s not all that far behind. In the last year I’ve only replaced two things that weren’t either wear items or user (well, squirrel) damage. And arguably at that age and mileage, just about everything is becoming a wear item, tbh...
