Kinja'd!!!

It’s three months until Oppo rally and after my experience at the latest LeMons Rally I’ve realized I need to re-do the starting points on offer. While it’s good to have points that encourage people to bring interesting vehicles to compete with, the main focus of the event is the checkpoints and scoring points during the rally itself. Therefore it’s important to ensure that the person who works their butt off during the rally doesn’t automatically lose to the person who brought an oddball car but did nothing at all during the rally. For that reason I’m doing two things. First, I’m installing a start line points cap of 200, and second I’m restructuring the points. Here is the new structure.

Vehicle Performance:

+5 for <5 seconds 0-60

+5 for >12.5 seconds 0-60

+10 for <4 seconds 0-60

+10 for >17.5 seconds 0-60

+15 if it can’t do 60

Vehicle Heritage:

+3 for Swedish

+3 for Aussie

+5 for Italian

+10 for Indian

+20 for Indian Motorcycle

+10 for French

+10 for British (half points for modern Mini, because Deutschland)

+35 for homebuilt

+25 for east of the Iron Curtain (look it up, kids)

+2 for 1980s

+5 for 1970s

+10 for 1960s

+15 for 1950s

+25 for pre-1950

Engine and Transmission:

+5 for odd number of cylinders

+2 for V8, and we will witness you

+5 for more than 8 cylinders

+15 for more than 12 cylinders

+2 for carburetor

+2 for each turbo

+2 for supercharger

+10 for twincharged (turbo and supercharger)

+5 for air-cooled (double if not VW or Porsche)

+5 for an engine too big for Rally America ( Rule 10.2.A.3 )

+3 for flat engine society

+5 for rotary

+100 for radial

+75 for turbine

+15 for electric (you’re very brave)

+25 for using a fuel not available at filling stations (no Tesla superchargers)

+30 for any ill advised mod from Roadkill (leaf blowers, boost caboose, pickup with jet boat engine in the bed, towing a Prius with a Gremlin, etc)

+200 if you bring an actual car from Roadkill

+5 for rear-mid mounted

+10 for rear mounted

+15 each for multiple engines (electric motors don’t count)

+3 for manual (save the manuals!)

+5 for manual on the tree

+2 for column shift auto

+5 for sequential (because racecar)

-5 for flappy paddles (because Stef says you need to be punished)

Body/chassis:

+5 for odd number of doors (hatch doesn’t count)

+5 for no doors (as in removed, Jeep-style. Extra 5 points if it’s not a Jeep)

+15 for no doors (as in have to go in through the window/roof, Dukes of Hazzard-style)

+10 for suicide doors

+5 for shooting brake

+3 for wagon (save the wagons!)

+10 for non-factory convertible

+5 if it can’t fit in a standard parking space

+5 if it would have a bad time at the 11foot8 bridge

+2 for every seat over 6

+3 for two seats

+5 for single seat

+2 for two wheels

+5 for three wheels

+50 for one wheel

+5 for roll bar (non-factory)

+20 for roll cage

+15 for Beetle pan kit car

+0-50 for other (at discretion of judge)

Deductions & Additions

-100 for each traffic violation ticket (don’t be a dick on the road)

-50 for each parking ticket (don’t park like a dick either)

+0-50 for bribes (did I say that out loud?)

+50 for best YouTube/Twitter/Instagram video of the day

+0-50 for creative roadside repairs (done on your car or another competitor’s car)

+0-50 for junkyard parts gained and installed en route

+0-50 for ridiculous themes &/or outfits

+5 for every 100 miles traveled to attend (done in the competing car, caps at 50 points)

+1 for every 100 miles traveled to attend (not done in the competing car)

+30 if you bought the car off craigslist less than a week before the rally

+60 if you bought the car off craigslist less than 48 hours before the rally

+0 for showing up in a press loaner, and may God have mercy on your soul

For those who haven’t heard about Oppo rally and want to know what the heck I’m talking about, check the tag to get caught up.

No extra points for carbureted engines?

How about originally carbureted engines with EFI conversions?

Swedish should be at least +5

Right now my S80 would start at +3 points

Shit I only get like 6 points for my Miata lol. Guess I need to go HAM on the silly outfit and perform all of the roadside maintenance for everybody else (damn Mazda isnt gonna break down on its own).

FWIW I expect most people will score well below 50. I’m just putting a safety in there to ensure someone like 505 doesn’t build a single Frankencar out of his collection, show up, go straight to the finish line, and win.

Kinja'd!!!

So even if I get this re-assembled in time with the 250 & 3-speed with electric overdrive I get +13 points (maybe a bit more depending how pathetic it’s 0-60 still is) for the vehicle & +50 points for driving it to the starting line.

Kinja'd!!! "Dusty Ventures" (dustyventures)
02/27/2017 at 14:53, STARS: 1

Yes, but that’s a solid head start. As I said, I can’t leave it so someone can have an insumountable lead purely due to vehicle choice. At LeMons Rally it took Stef and me three days just to equal the points some teams left the start line with. I want to give interesting cars and teams an edge, but still make it possible that anyone can win if they put in the effort during the rally.

Damn. Just showing up in my ‘61 Ford would get me about 40 points. But it would take me a whole day, probably, to get there - even from New Hampshire. In my wagon, I’d get there in comfort and without incident, but with only 6 points - wagon, manual.

Would you grant extra points for each functioning Indian Pump and bed-mounted firefighting axe? How about hand-painted silver leaf details over 70's lime-yellow paint on the hood?

Kinja'd!!! "Dusty Ventures" (dustyventures)
02/27/2017 at 14:58, STARS: 0

Maybe. There’s always those “at discretion of judge” bonus points. You’d have to convince me at the start line that you deserve more points.

Kinja'd!!! "Pixel" (Improbcat)
02/27/2017 at 14:59, STARS: 0

No worries. I’m mostly just being snarky.

I know there is no way you can account for every weird variation in cars that might show up. You may want to consider a blanket “+5 weird/obsolete/stupid vehicle options” to be issued at the organizer’s discretion. So if someone shows up in a dodge with the Gyromatic transmission, or a combined CD/cassette head unit, or somesuch you can toss them a few bonus points.

I wonder how hard it would be to acquire one of the actual cars from Roadkill. That would be a surefire way to win!

I really want the Rotsun but I feel like the Ramp truck could be more fun

Kinja'd!!! "deekster_caddy" (deekster_caddy)
02/27/2017 at 15:19, STARS: 1

Excellent. I have to drive somebody’s car to Florida this weekend from Boston and was considering trailering it down behind the Buick. I decided it would be cheaper to throw away a few things to fit all their crap in their car (moving trip) and fly home than to drive both ways though... And the difference in their car getting 25 mpg vs the Buick at 12 is significant...

At least there are a bunch of things giving me starting points on the grid! I definitely meet the “engine too big for rally america” bit!

No clue, the truck is currently stripped to the frame in front. I’m putting in a low-miles 250, and a 1957 3-spd overdrive that has been sitting for years. I’m also rebuilding the front-end and adding disc brakes. In theory it’ll be even more reliable. But the rally may end up being the shakedown cruise.

Half points for MINI but not for any of the other brands which are owned by foreign companies? That’s racist. What about Jaguar? Or Lotus? Or Lamborghini?

I say cars with foreign owners should be scored based on place of manufacture. I mean, my MINI is a Rover design built in the UK.

I want to know what can do a road rally but only has one wheel.

Kinja'd!!! "Dusty Ventures" (dustyventures)
02/27/2017 at 17:16, STARS: 0

Place of manufacture becomes too complicated. Subarus become American, Fords become Mexican, German, Canadian, etc, and so on. The full 10 points is meant to attract cars like Triumphs, MGs, Talbots, classic Lotus, etc. Other modern British cars will receive a percentage of the 10 as determined by the judge.

Kinja'd!!! "TheTurbochargedSquirrel" (thatsquirrel)
02/27/2017 at 17:18, STARS: 0

Finnegan has the ramp truck and is currently slowly working on it. The rots in is also owned by the company and recently was filmed I believe. Some kid out there owns that sweet wagon they had in an episode and painted the roof with rattlecan metal flake. The diesel caddy is sitting in that salvage yard. Probably beyond repair though.
