Recently I was hauled along by one of these.

Kinja'd!!!

A Class 201 diesel locomotive made by GM in Canada. Our railway company bought 32 of these in the 1990s. Currently 12 are in storage, a polite way of saying that they’re parked up on sidings being cannibalised for parts because they’ve been partially replaced by DMUs and freight haulage has reduced. They’re also not especially reliable.

Anyway, I’ve found out since that they’re powered by these:

Kinja'd!!!

An EMD 12-710. It’s a two stroke V12 diesel with 11.6 litres - not in total, per cylinder - so 139 l. It produces 3,200 bhp at 900 rpm and spectacular amounts of particulates, NOx and other not so nice things. One of its exotic features is a turbocharger that’s mechanically driven at low speeds (to allow the engine to start) and converts itself to being exhaust driven at higher revs.

I was wondering if the other half of the arrangement would be along in a post...

Does it VTEC?

Well, if you want 3,200 bhp....

They do V16s and V20s as well, same size per cylinder.

Sadly, it seems not, not least because it only has exhaust valves...

Those kinds of displacements are common in train engines.

EMD’s current passenger locomotive is the F125, which uses the Caterpillar C175-20, at “only” 5.3 liters per cylinder... but that’s 20 cylinders.

However, looking at EMD’s site, their only freight locomotive with something that isn’t a 710, is the SD70ACe-T4, with an EMD 12-1010. That’s 1010 cubic inches, or over 16.5 liters... per cylinder . And there’s 12 of them.

Now, if you want real insanity... ship engines. The Wärtsilä RT-flex96C is 1820 liters. Per freaking cylinder. And there’s as many as 14 of them. Then, there’s the MAN B&W K108ME-C. 2437 liters per cylinder, although AFAIK the biggest in existence is a 12-cylinder. The design supports 14, though...

Things we don’t see there: locos with only one driving cab.

dude, my bike is 0.325 per cylinder. this is nuts.

I should get a job working on them, seems fun.

Wait......2 strokes don’t have valves......... At least none that I’ve dealt with.

That would be because you haven’t come across diesel ones!

They’re rather different beasts to the spark ignited variety.

I love EMD’s. The 567. The 645. The 710. Awesome engines... amazing locomotives. Did I mention that the 645 was available in a 20 cylinder version?
