As promised, here are some additional shots of today’s junkyard find. They don’t even know what they have, as evidenced by ‘Passat’ (or ‘Passit’) marked on the key and quarter panel. Full VIN on the key tag if someone wants to look it up.

I had a little fun with the tags to make this post easier to find...

3 questions

1) how many miles on the odo?

2) what’s the deal with the dried mud and torn up passenger seat?

3) is the Disco in the background worth an LS swap?

The interior is in better shape than I would have expected, usually when a luxury reaches this point in its life the interior has been torn up by the part time landscaper storing running weed wackers in the back seat, the car smells of the mobile meth lab in the trunk and the passenger seat had an incontinent pit bull living in it.

1) I couldn’t read the odo; I’m pretty sure it’s in that central screen in the instrument cluster. The voltmeter was reading over 12V, but the key didn’t want to turn or I didn’t know how to fire up this beast (and didn’t want to read the owner’s manual)

2) I don’t know what’s up with the seat. The mud is because of the rain we had here in STL a couple of days ago. Unlike the expensive yard ($2 admission fee) across the river that is completely paved, this yard is just dirt with lots of rocks/gravel.

3) I’ll post a few pics of the Disco under another post. The interior is partially disassembled, but the vehicle looks otherwise intact. There is writing on the driver’s door with the warning ‘NO BRAKES WHATSOEVER’ (check my previous posts from last week; I think I had a couple of pics of it)

Nothing with Phaeton level cachet can ever be considered too far gone, but my god those seats are grody. Well, first things first: a pair of new front air struts ($1,250 for the pair), two new batteries ($220 x2), and I’ll assume it probably needs a new pump too ($700).

EDIT: Unless that sucker has been flooded out, which this one was in Florida. It’s only good for parts. No wonder the interior looks like it does.

Other than a little dirt from the lot itself (it just rained the other day and this lot isn’t paved) and the damage to the passenger’s seat, the interior was in surprisingly good shape overall. Some pieces of plastic had snapped off the cupholders in the back and were tucked into the pockets on the back of the front seats. The sunroof switch was a tad wonky, but everything else felt intact and solid, although the feel of the controls wasn’t exactly in the BMW/MB/Audi category; heck, a lot of the controls on my $17K Mazda actually feel smoother and more substantial TBH. And the controls in my Mazda feel somewhat cheap compared to those in the CX-9 that I looked at last month.

Just off 64 by all of the strip joints (Hollywood, Hustler, etc.) A much bigger selection, a bit cleaner, and cool homemade part carts that use space saver wheels and tires.

There was one a these a few blocks down from me for a while, wanted to take a pic once the snow melted, but sadly it’s gone gone.

But from what I could see it was destroyed. Rear bumper was basically on the ground, paint wasn’t that good, dinged up body panels, the works.

That’s a steal at $3999. It’s worth at least $4002.

Since it’s marked as a Passit (sic) on the key and quarter panel, I wonder if they even have a clue what they actually have.

OMG there aren’t many of them but, somewhere, there’s a Phaeton true believer who really, really wants this...parts if nothing else.

Anyone posted it on The Samba yet?

So do they really want $4k for it or is that a sticker left over from the dealer that couldn’t sell it?

The yards around here actually sell intact and running vehicles. Some need major repairs, like the $1,299 E39 528i I saw a few weeks back that needed a transmission. If you had a spare $4K you could roll away with this Phaeton. Notice I didn’t say ‘drive’ away; I don’t know what mechanical maladies, if any, this car has.

Yeah, there’s a little damage to the pax seat, front bumper and the odd interior button as well as some hazing on the lights but that’s about the extent of the damage. Oh, and a little paint issue around the rear plate. Sure, it’s a bit dusty and dirty, mostly because of the yard it’s in (it rained this week and people getting in and out has transferred a fair amount of the dirt you see) and the fact that it probably sat around collecting dust for a year or two (just a guess based on the registration expiration and the fact that we can register for two years here), but it should clean up fairly nicely. I’d probably replace the rotors because of the rust; the rotors on my Mazda develop superficial surface rust pretty quickly, but that car gets driven almost daily and the first stop or two cleans them up in no time. The rest of the leather is in great shape, as is the wood and the paint on the metal, which is surprising for a 10+ year old, seemingly abandoned vehicle.
