Oh yes! If it was a Thunderbird instead of a Couger, I was going to say make it look like the Thunderbird from the Crow.

Kinja'd!!!

But I have a better idea. Turn it into Bender when he was turned into a werecar.

Kinja'd!!!

I’d drive it regardless.

It’s funny. I was just telling me wife about an hour ago that I’m starting to really like the Fat Cats. That would be a big comfy convertible to tool around in.

If it had the 351 some of these are fast AF for an early 70's car. Also a bit less conspicuous than a Mustang.

it’s a ‘73, so it’s not that fast. it’s not an XR-7 so chances are it has a two barrel 351C, which had like 160 horsepower or so. in ‘71 you could still get the 429, but for ‘72 and ‘73 the Cougar was 351C only; 2 barrel, 4 barrel, or CJ. They kind of did stupid stuff with the Cleveland engine. If you got the 2 bbl. then it had smaller intake ports for better low- and mid-range power, but had “open” combustion chambers with no quench so anything over 9.5:1 compression was risky. the 4 bbl/CJ heads had smaller chambers with quench, so 10-11:1 was doable, but the enormous intake ports lost you low end power.

If that’s as clean as it appears to be, and there’s a motor and trans of some sort under the hood, that’s a NP all day-

Is it really that straight and clean? If it ’ s a 6 cylinder slushbox that ’ s burning oil, I think it ’ s still a NP. In all likelihood, there ’ s a 302 or 351 under the hood. EDIT: Wikipedia says a 351 2V was the base engine. Only other options were a 4V or a 429.

Kinja'd!!! "jimz" (jimz)
02/23/2017 at 12:34, STARS: 0

yeah the 4Vs were pretty quick. plus ‘71 was before the move to SAE net ratings and before the beginning of the Great Emissions Strangulation starting in ‘73.

02/23/2017 at 12:34, STARS: 2

‘72 and ‘73 Cougars only had 351 Clevelands. they were the “lux” version of the Mustang, so no pedestrian 6-bangers here.

if it was a ‘71 with a 429 that would be a real gem.

Kinja'd!!! "WilliamsSW" (williamssw)
02/23/2017 at 12:36, STARS: 0

Yes, you’re right - and from the bumpers, this clearly must be a ‘73, I guess. So a 351 it is, if it’s original.

It’s gorgeous

I only got out to look at it for 2 minutes. My immediate guess was that they were asking $6k to $10k for it. So I walked away thinking it was outta my league.

I called the guy and found out $4700

Now I wished I’d looked closer, wrote down VIN and taken more pictures

If you really want it...

...maybe try calling the guy, tell him (without blowing smoke) you really like his car, you’ve been looking for something like it, and you don’t want to offend and be a lowballer but you like it a lot and this is all you can do. Ask him to keep your number and if it ever happens he’s willing to sell at your price to a good home, call and you’ll be over with ca$h money. Also thank him for his time and tell him again it’s a nice car.

Hella long shot but he’ll be able tell you’re just being straight up with him. You just never know what might happen with the guy’s circumstances, stranger things sure have.

What’s the worst that could happen, he swears and hangs up? lol And as a seller he needs serious firm offers, you know?

GL if you decide to try

pretty much don’t like cougars after 1970. You are in luck though, I see these cheap everywhere.

Looks like a Nice Price to me... especially if it has a manual. And if it’s stock, then it will either have a 351W, 351C or a 429.

But I would be inclined to look under the hood, check all the fluids and inspect the underside with the car on a lift before making any offers.
