Are We STILL Doing Bright Windshield Frames on Convertibles?!

Kinja'd!!!

It’s 2017! I don’t know who started the silver frame on convertibles but why is this still a thing? Every B-Pillar short of a Maybach, Mulsanne, or Phantom is blacked out across the industry and now every pillar is getting blacked out bits thrown at them. But when you only get one pillar option all of sudden we switch from black to bling? When blacking out makes perfect sense? It’s 2017, people!! I mean Land O Lakes, the cheese factor!

I don’t have an issue with it, I’m just surprised anyone is still bothering with it.

Nah, Mazda thought black was a better idea:

Kinja'd!!!

IT WAS NOT. Why can’t the windshield frames on convertibles be the same color as the body? WHY?????

I can’t remember Audi NOT doing this, ever since I saw the first A4 convertible in the showroom in 1994. Brightwork on modern cars still bothers me in almost every case. Old-school metal chrome? Great. Modern plastichrome has gotten out of hand. Even Bob Lutz called it out as a cheap way to make a car look like it’s worth thousands more.

The silver loop around the entire opening (car and windshield) makes the whole thing look sort of like a loafer and now I can’t unsee it. My work slippers are trimmed like that, only they have purple.

Those pickups, ugh, it’d help those wonky door proportions sooooo much.

Because that looks bad. Unless the top is also the same color, which is nearly impossible if it’s cloth. It just doesn’t work.

Somehow, Jeeps can pull it off, though. But others just can’t. And yeah, it’s a matter of opinion, but unfortunately I think you’re in the minority here.

That adds a ton of visual weight and awkwardness, the black surround is much better.

We need to bring back two-tone paint options on non-sporty convertibles.

Bring back the boulevard cruiser!

I like the black, personally, especially if the soft top is black. But yeah, what’s wrong with body color?

The only acceptable way to do this is if the surround is actually made of brushed aluminum

I might be in the majority but this is a design cue I’ve never actually noticed.

I think this is only on the S5 and not the A5, same with the TT vs the TTS

I think the 124 comes only with silver - Fiat claimed it was supposed to recall the chrome windshield trim on the original, but modern pillars are just too thick for that to really work.
